Carlsbad Visitors Guide 2008 - (Page 7) HIKING/WALKING TRAILS • The Carlsbad Trail System offers a mix of open hills covered with native chaparral, quiet paths through a forest of stately eucalyptus, or a panoramic lagoon walk. • Aviara Trails include eight miles of choices for hikers, walkers, and runners, from steep hills with tremendous views to shady “almost”-level paths. Golf Trail has great views of Aviara Golf Course; hikers can see golfers on one side and native birds on the other. There are a couple of steep spots on this trail, but other than the occasional birdsong or a shouted “fore!” the trail is a quiet getaway. Salt Marsh Trail has flora and fauna unique to the habitat, and the trail ends with a good view of Batiquitos Lagoon. Eucalyptus Trail adds an aromatic experience to the visual. There are some steep climbs on this trail as well, but, like the others, it provides nice views of Batiquitos Lagoon and the Pacific. Lagoon Trail is the longest of these trails and probably the most popular. It is the flattest and offers a little bit of all the other trails. Interpretive signs along the way help identify birds and plants and make note of the geology and ecology of the area. • Hosp Grove features three miles of unpaved trails winding through a forest of eucalyptus trees. Considered moderateto-difficult by incline, so be prepared for a good workout. • Rancho Carrillo Trails has about four miles of trails. The trails are broad, with a decomposed granite surface and slight inclines. New development along the open space has made good use of native and drought-resistant landscaping. The lagoon includes mud flats, salt- and freshwater marsh, and deep water. It also has facilities for boating, skiing, and other water sports. The lagoon is home to Hubbs/Seaworld White Sea Bass Hatchery and Carlsbad Aquafarm, a mussel-farming operation. Dedicated areas are available for water skiing, personal watercraft, boardsailing, canoeing, rowing, fishing and kayaking. Kayaking the lagoon is a popular activity and is best at high tide when numerous streams appear bringing a multitude of birds and wildlife.
