2007 G8 Summit Magazine - (Page 25) Mecklenburg-Vorpommern – MV the Place to Be Welcome to MecklenburgVorpommern Jürgen Seidel Minister of Economics, Labor and Tourism of the State of MecklenburgVorpommern The fairy tale castle Neuschwanstein, the Octoberfest in Munich, outstanding cars and the best beer in the world: this is how the world – albeit superficially – sees Germany. Mecklenburg-Vorpommern can add a few attractive highlights to this image. Last year, while visiting Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the American President got to know the merits of our state. This summer, during the G-8 Summit of heads of state and government, journalists from around the world and numerous guests will have the opportunity to not only get to know Germany’s oldest seaside resort. In addition, their numerous encounters with the land and its people will show them a Mecklenburg-Vorpommern that is far from clichés and outdated perceptions and has become a modern state which has not forgotten its traditions and its hospitality. Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has a lot to offer: The state has Germany’s longest Baltic Sea coast, its largest island with Rügen Island and its largest lake with Lake Müritz. With Europe’s largest water sport area, the Mecklenburg Lake District, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern enjoys the reputation of being a mecca for all sailors and water sport enthusiasts. At the same time, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is a land full of history. The Grand Duke Friedrich Franz the First of Mecklenburg-Schwerin loved the land and the sea. He realized his dream of a “white city at the Baltic Sea” with great resolve at the end of the eighteenth century. The Lord of the Schwerin Castle founded Germany’s first seaside resort in Heiligendamm in 1793, thereby laying the cornerstone for Germany’s historic spa and resort culture along the Baltic Sea. Now, around 200 years later, a far-reaching signal will once again radiate from this fascinating place. Soon the eyes of the world will be looking at our state when the heads of state and government of the seven leading industrial nations and Russia meet for the World Economic Summit in the seaside resort of Heiligendamm in early June 2007. Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has in all of its moving times been able to preserve its appeal and natural charm. More than a thousand old castles and manor houses, long, shady treelined avenues and groomed parks are still witness of this fact to this day. But MecklenburgVorpommern has also accepted the challenges of modern times. Following German reunification in 1990, the state invested in a standard setting modern tourism infrastructure. This is also why Mecklenburg-Vorpommern now, along with Bavaria, is among Germany’s favorite holiday regions. Germany’s northeastern most state with its 57 health resorts and spas is well on the way to establish itself as the number one “health state”. Every guest finds his or her place to feel good in this state of more than 2000 lakes – from the nature-loving recreational tourist to the manager attending conventions even to the health conscious 5 star plus connoisseur enjoying customized wellness offers. Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is pleased to be the host of this top-class event and will present itself to the visitors from at home and abroad as being cosmopolitan, innovative and highlyefficient as a first rate address for investors in the booming Baltic Sea economic region with 60 million inhabitants. In addition to traditional economic and growth sectors such as the food processing industry, ecologic agriculture and organic products, the maritime economy as well as the information and communications sector, young, technology-oriented branches are playing an ever growing role: the life sciences branch, environmental and climate technologies are growing dynamically. The “white land at the Baltic Sea” has become the gate to northern and northeastern Europe. It offers a unique natural quality of life which cannot be bought with any amount of money and which today plays a decisive role in the policy of establishing firms in the region. As the Minister of Economics, Labor and Tourism, I would like to cordially invite you to get to know our state as an endearing business location worth living in. I promise you excellent individual support with an attractive range of economic incentives for investors. The future lies in the North. -25- |
