CDM News - May 2008 - (Page 11) Building a mall on a 212-square-mile island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean does not come without challenges. All of the supplies needed to construct the building and parking lot must be ordered and delivered to the island by ship or plane, including cement to make concrete. Gathering enough local construction workers to build the BX was also a challenge on such a small island. On Target “Despite claiming 6 weather days in July and 5 days in August, we are still on schedule,” Dy said. “We have a great crew, and everything is going as planned.” The vertical construction approach has contributed to the success of the project. Wall section pre-casting is done onsite; the walls are then tilted into place. If there is a slight rain, concrete for the tilt walls can still be poured. “The BX is an important project that will benefit the population of Anderson AFB for years to come.” — John R. Floden, P.E., CDM associate and HERC program manager In addition, Guam is situated in the active typhoon region of the western Pacific Ocean. Typhoon season, which can begin as early as April and ends in December, has required considerations to the project schedule. According to Derwin Y. Dy, CDM project manager, the schedule needed to include adequate time to allow for shut downs due to rain. The residents of Anderson AFB are excited for the opening of the new BX. AAFES has made efforts to communicate project progress by posting status charts throughout the base. Flor Payton, general manager of the exchange, has been very happy with the progress of the construction and its contribution to the development of the Anderson AFB community. “The new BX supports the mission of AAFES to continue to provide quality merchandise and services to our military community and generate earnings to supplement the military morale, welfare, and recreation programs,” she said. | Nicole M.
