CDM News - May 2008 - (Page 15) for a new playground. CDM is continuing to support the shelter, coordinating donations from local businesses. Arroyo Seco Volunteer Event CDM’s Wendy R. Katagi and Jennifer M. Jones (Los Angeles) participated in a volunteer event to revegetate a portion of land near the Central Arroyo Seco Stream in Pasadena, California. Volunteers, including 35 students from Webb High School in Claremont, California, removed invasive species and planted 50 native shrubs and trees along Rosemont Avenue. Pictured (LR): Robert E. Stewart, Dewanda L. Kelone, and John S. Carroll. CDM was recognized in December at the dedication of the Lazarus House transitional housing facility in Lawrence, Massachusetts. The new 20-unit apartment complex will provide transitional housing for families in need, as well as vocational training and medical care. CDM provided probono site development and engineering services for the new facility, and has also served as a long-time sponsor for the Hike for Hope, a charity walk that has raised over $1 million for the project. University of Florida - CDM Endowment On behalf of the University of Florida (UF) Environmental Engineering Sciences Department, each year CDM provides an endowed scholarship of $8,000, plus a teaching assistantship, to a prospective graduate student. The 2008 award was recently presented to Rebecca G. McLarty. Rebecca will complete her master’s degree in environmental engineering from UF in May 2008. In 2007, she received dual bachelor’s degrees in environmental engineering and Spanish, also from UF, graduating with honors in both. The CDM Fort Lauderdale, Florida office hosted its 7th annual Engineering Day for Girls as part of Engineering Week in February. Fifteen South Plantation High School students enjoyed a day of presentations designed to introduce them to engineering as a career. The first half of the day was devoted to the technical aspects of engineering, with the afternoon dedicated to a tour of the Deerfield water treatment plant.
