CDM News - December 2007 - (Page 15) “CDM is committed to the continual improvement of the environmental, social, and economic performance of our operations and of the services we provide to our clients worldwide. We’re working to conserve energy and resources, reduce emissions of greenhouse gases, and help improve the quality of life for the communities in which we live and work.” — Thomas D. Furman Jr., P.E., BCEE, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer CDM’s approach to improving sustainability in our own operations is based on a process that engages employees to identify opportunities, implement improvements, and share best practices in all triple bottom line dimensions. Sustainability at CDM Of course, as an employee-owned firm, we have long practiced transparency in our governance and financial operations, distributing annual and quarterly financial reports to all employees. CDM’s culture is defined by our core values—excellence, initiative, integrity, teamwork, and shared commitment—and a detailed code of ethics. All employees participate annually in ethics and diversity training. CDM emphasizes the responsible use of resources, reduction of our environmental footprint, and consideration of life-cycle impacts. The firm participates in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s WasteWise recycling program and maintains a long-term, award-winning recycling program that has lowered waste production volume by nearly 50 percent in our world headquarters. We procure “green” office supplies and ENERGY STAR™ equipment, use Forest Stewardship Council-certified paper and printers for our stationery and major publications, and encourage paperless communications. As a basis for reducing our carbon footprint, we have completed a comprehensive greenhouse gas emission inventory at our world headquarters and are undertaking similar evaluations in our global network of offices. CDM is also active in Cambridge Climate Leaders and the Cambridge Energy Alliance, partnerships with the city of Cambridge, Massachusetts—location of CDM’s world headquarters—to conserve energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Environmental Stewardship Social Responsibility CDM provides an inclusive, fair, and stimulating work environment that values diversity, development, and learning. Our award-winning health and safety program consistently achieves annual safety ratings better than industry average. Last year, CDM’s wellness program received the Silver Well Workplace Award from the Wellness Councils of North America. CDM’s culture of continuous learning includes more than 60,000 hours per year of training delivered through our own CDM University. Our employees create and deliver solutions that promote sustainable economic growth, reduce poverty, build local capacity, and improve quality of life for communities around the world. Our commitment to economic stewardship within CDM draws on our longstanding commitment to building a stronger firm for future generations through strategic planning, leadership development, and employee ownership, among other practices. In addition, CDM employees contribute thousands of hours annually to civic and charitable causes. The firm and our employees also provide financial and volunteer support to global organizations like Water for People, Engineers Without Borders, and the United Way. We partner with schools to help children develop business, technical, and leadership skills; fund higher education scholarships through the American Water Works Association, United Negro College Fund, and several universities; and provide internships and cooperative education opportunities.
