Schreiber, P.E., BCEE, D.WRE (Cambridge) was reappointed to the Advisory Committee on Water Information (ACWI) for the American Society of Civil Engineers. He also continues his role as co-chair of the newly created ACWI Subcommittee on Ground Water, charged with developing a framework for nationwide monitoring of groundwater by mid-2008. Randall T. Smith, P.E. (Walnut Creek) was appointed co-chair of both the Sustainability and the Carbon Balance/Climate Change subcommittees of the American Council of Engineering Companies’ Environment and Energy Committee. CDM’s Fort Lauderdale employees hosted their sixth annual Engineering Day for Girls to introduce 15 female students from South Plantation High School to engineering as a potential career. Held in two half-day sessions, the program included presentations by engineers, hands-on activities, and a tour of the Deerfield Beach water treatment plant. The event was featured in the Florida Water Resources Journal. CDM Hosts Young Female Engineer Hopefuls CDM’s Bellevue office was named one of the “Best Workplaces for Recycling” by King County, Washington, in recognition of the firm’s outstanding recycling program and commitment to making recycling easy for employees. Recycling Recognition Leaders in Community Service Two CDM projects garnered top honors in the DesignBuild Institute of America’s National Design-Build Awards. The Coastal Development and Environmental Improvements Project in Montenegro, completed for the U.S. Agency for International Development, won in the “Water Under $15 Million” category. The project improved vital water and wastewater services for Budva, Kotor, and Cetinje—three coastal communities that depend on tourism to support the local economy. CDM Wins Two Design-Build Awards The Cambridge Chamber of Commerce named CDM one of the city’s top three corporations in community service, recognizing our achievements in developing community partnerships, supporting philanthropic activities, and encouraging volunteerism. Among the attendees were (left to right) Guillermo J. Vicens, Carol A. Rego, Glenn D. Howard, William S. Howard, Brian D. Buckley, and Michael T. Healy. Budva, Montenegro Camp Pendleton CDM co-sponsored two workshops, in California and New York, on rapidly evolving greenhouse gas regulations and their impacts on business. CDM industrial greenhouse gas management specialist Allan F. Bedwell (Irvine) spoke during interactive sessions that explored risks; required reductions; cap and trade prospects; greenhouse gas protocols, inventories, reporting, rule-making, and management opportunities; and planning for a carbon-constrained future. Greenhouse Gas Management Workshops The Southern Region tertiary treatment plant at the Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton in California won in the “Water Over $15 Million” category. CDM completed the compact, 5-mgd plant, with sequencing batch reactors, for the Naval Facilities Engineering Command to replace several aging facilities and meet effluent requirements for water reuse. 17
