CDM News - December 2007 - (Page 5) agenda to make Los Angeles the cleanest and greenest big city in the United States, the Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) has launched an initiative to make Los Angeles International Airport—along with LAWA’s three other airports—among the most sustainable in the world. LAWA has long demonstrated leadership in environmental stewardship through a number of innovative programs addressing energy conservation and recycling. It is now embarking on an ambitious sustainability program that will further enhance the airport’s role as a key driver in national and regional economic growth, social responsibility, and environmental stewardship. LAWA is implementing a unique sustainability performance improvement management system (SPIMS)—developed with CDM—that provides a framework for identifying and prioritizing sustainability performance improvement opportunities throughout the organization. Through a series of facilitated workshops that foster learning, knowledge sharing, and communication across the multiple levels of LAWA’s organization, the process recognizes sustainability efforts already underway and engenders collaboration among departments to achieve sustainability goals. “This cross-functional process validates LAWA’s efforts and builds awareness, which in turn influences improved sustainability behavior throughout the organization.” No stranger to sustainable concepts, LAWA consciously integrates such approaches wherever possible: using alternative fuels, achieving a 65percent recycle/reuse rate, irrigating 39 percent of airport landscape with reclaimed water, and donating tons of food to homeless shelters—29 tons in 2006 alone. “LAWA’s leadership position in sustainability performance improvement has long been noted in the industry, and is now being recognized more widely among staff and other city departments through the efforts of our staff involved with this initiative,” said Intissar Durham, LAWA sustainability program manager. The process continues by identifying and prioritizing potential improvement opportunities, setting metrics to measure performance, and establishing an implementation schedule, and then closes the loop by monitoring and communicating progress and goals for continual improvement. Once established, SPIMS provides a structured framework Guided by Mayor Antonio R. Villaraigosa’s environmental A Framework for Continual Improvement The SPIMS development process began with a qualitative assessment of current operations to identify sustainability performance improvement activities already underway. For example, LAX is currently in the midst of a multi-billion-dollar infrastructure rehabilitation and modernization effort, and while sustainable approaches are being used, “communication about these significant achievements is being enhanced through facilitated workshops,” explained Tom A. Pedersen, CPSS, CDM vice president and director of sustainability. CDM’s sustainability performance improvement management system provides a structured framework to continually evaluate and improve sustainability performance in the areas of environmental stewardship, economic growth, social responsibility, and governance.
