Management in Jordan of the Middle East, Jordan has been home to early settlements and great civilizations, including Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, Rome, and Persia. Today, Jordan has a rising population of 6 million, including recent immigrants fleeing regional conflicts who are drawn to this country of striking landscapes, a growing economy, and stable and progressive government. But with desert occupying 75 percent of its area and annual rainfall less than 200 millimeters (8 inches), the country’s water shortage presents a significant challenge. Jordan has one of the lowest per-capita levels of water resources in the world and available supplies are being depleted faster than they can be replenished. Sustainable Water Standing at the crossroads In Jerash—home to one of the largest Roman architecture sites outside Italy—the project aims to protect the Qairawan watershed through disposal systems for 350 houses, wastewater collection system inspections, and waste management upgrades. 7
