It all gets boiled down to a master plan, to which we refer to week in and week out as we analyze how we’re keeping our resolutions. For those of you at CES in January, recap after the show by writing down and sharing what you learned, who you met and what ideas were generated. Synthesize that information into a plan for the coming year. 2) Tell a friend and/or your family your resolutions. Your family and friends can help you hold yourself accountable for your resolutions. But in business, it’s even more important for your staff and your customers to know what your resolutions are. Your staff should hold you accountable for your commitments and the philosophies you espouse. 3) Set realistic goals. While it is great to aim high, allow yourself to set and achieve mini-goals as benchmarks along the way to your ultimate goal. Chart these minigoals each week or even daily, to see how you’re progressing. Big goals can seem out of reach until you break them down. 4) Stay positive. You are the leader of your team. Your enthusiasm can breed success. Let your staff and customers see how determined you are to stick with your resolutions. More importantly, let them observe the utter rush that accompanies the journey of pursuing reasonable yet aggressive objectives. Share the spotlight! Recognize everyone who helps bring goal attainment to fruition. Spread the good news by extending compliments, posting congratulations on a public board, or simply saying “thank you” for a job well done. 5) Stay flexible. If anything is constant in the CE business, it’s that there is always change. Industry trends may force you to adapt your resolutions. Don’t think of these adaptations as defeat. Instead remain flexible and embrace the question of how you can change your mini-goals to achieve your long-term success. Our industry offers devices and services to help us keep our resolutions—be they personal or business related. There’s a technology or product to help us manage our weight, track our fitness goals, stay connected and reach out to customers. But even with the best technology, you need the right attitude and the right plan to put you on the road to success. Welcome 2008—the year brings enormous opportunities. However, in January, most of the world identifies with a different sort of resolution, and it usually comes on or around New Year’s Day. Dictionary.com has 12 meanings for resolution, but my favorite is “the mental state or quality of being resolved or resolute; firmness of purpose.” So how about a check-up from the neck-up?
