Vision - January/February 2009 - (Page 4) in this issue on the consumer electronics horizon F Things to Come President and CeO lipping the calendar brings a New Year and the 2009 International CES—all full of new possibilities and products. We caught a preview of some of the innovative products at the i-stage competition held at CEA’s Industry Forum in October. The winner of the CEA i-stage event was Boxee, the “open, connected, social media center”. Boxee walked away with a $50,000 check and a coveted CES booth space. In this issue, CE Vision looks at some of the latest advances that further integrate vehicles with CE devices like HD radio, 3D map views and in-vehicle Internet access that provide new opportunities for both car makers and the CE industry. Imagine when your car automatically finds the most inexpensive gas, receives destination information over the Web and sends out repair alerts to your dealer. And that doesn’t even touch the entertainment possibilities. While at the International CES, check out Ford Motor Co. keynoter Alan Mullaly, formerly of Boeing, who will talk about his aggressive plan to transform Ford into a lean, global enterprise that delivers products and technologies that customers value. Already in PCs, laptops and gaming consoles, consumers soon will expect 3D in devices like phones, MP3 players and TVs. Graphics acceleration is the enabling technology. Find out what this means for your product planning, design or manufacturing strategies. What’s more, CE Vision takes the pulse of ultrawideband technology that overlaps both the PC and CE worlds. Unique UWB applications include transferring video content from one electronics system to another or augmented reality where a pair of enhanced glasses lets you see graphic elements overlaid on top of real images. For example, car repair possibilities are being explored by BMW, in which instructions would appear as a user is looking under the hood of a car. For our international coverage, CE Vision looks at how developing nations are creating a new group of enterprising entrepreneurs who leverage technology to reduce poverty, create jobs and improve social conditions. Hear from some of these leaders first-hand at the Technology and Emerging Countries (TEC) program at CES on Friday afternoon. CE Vision also had the opportunity to ask several leading global executives to talk about some of the issues they confront. Finally, Shawn Dubravac explores three things your company can do in response to today’s tough economy; CE Newsline looks at how some CEA member companies are greening their products and Market Insider reveals four hot trends for 2009.
