Vision - March 2009 - (Page 4) in this issue on the consumer electronics horizon T A Positive Spin President and CeO he headlines are gloomy, the job layoffs frighten, and declining housing values and stock market swings have rattled us all. It’s difficult not to be seized by panic, but we have no choice but to soldier on in this new environment. One of my favorite quotes is from early 20th Century British writer James Allen: “Circumstances do not make the man; they reveal him”. To me, this quote means, are you up to the challenge? Basically, when it gets tough—are you going to innovate or wallow? You get to choose how you react to a difficult situation. As President Obama pointed out during his inauguration speech, Americans are not less productive or innovative than we were before the economic crisis. Although our confidence has taken a hit, we have the same skills and drive we had before. We need to refuel the American spirit with a can-do attitude and reevaluate, not retreat. In this issue, Gary Shapiro expresses his concerns regarding the global economic crisis. He says massive deficit spending will saddle us for generations and weaken the dollar as investors move to more stable nations. What’s more, card check and free trade are issues that will have a profound impact on the nation. Shawn DuBravac searches for the bottom of the stock market in The Economist column. He says stocks tend to bottom five to six months before the economy and that unemployment tends to rise long after the economy has bottomed. He believes the stock market bottom could be now. And Accenture’s Kumu Puri lists seven actions that companies can take to improve their competitive position in a global downturn. For her tips to help ensure your company’s future success, turn to page 23. Many people are finding social media to be a valuable way to quickly connect with diverse groups of people who share a common interest. Communities of like-minded people now can spring up overnight. Corporate America has taken notice and is logging into Facebook, MySpace, YouTube, Flickr and Twitter to reach customers in an authentic and meaningful way. Natalie Hope McDonald looks at how some companies are using these social sites. In our international coverage, Gary Arlen looks at global retailing and the advantages and challenges of having a regional partner in Global Selling. Rob Calem looks at how high-definition audio technologies have evolved and the innovations that are soon to come. Murray Slovick takes a look at 3D, and Steve Koenig analyzes the video game market with the numbers to back it up in Market Insider. If you want to reach me fastest, use social media.
