Vision - September/October 2007 - (Page 31) CEAnewsline the video), many media players are designed to read the caption data from a disc and write the data invisibly into the video signal passing from the player to an attached TV through an analog connector. The attached TV’s own tuner can decode and display the captions. In this scenario, the consumer uses the TV controls to operate the TV caption decoder. Of course, consumers may not wish to connect their media player to their high-definition display using a standard definition analog connector, because doing so sacrifices some of the video quality. Most high-definition interfaces carry only display information and do not provide a way for closed caption data to be carried from a player to an attached TV. If the media player is connected to a TV with an HDMI cable, the TV will not receive caption data from the media player and will not decode captions from the packaged media. However, another option is available. Most packaged media, for example DVDs, Blu-Ray discs, and HD-DVDs, are encoded with subtitles which can be accessed and displayed by their respective media players. A growing number of content providers are using this feature to provide a particular type of subtitling that is optimized for people with hearing disabilities. Known as “Subtitling for Deaf and Hard of Hearing”, this option is distinct from English subtitles in providing written cues to non-language audible information, such as sound effects. Because the ability to decode and write subtitles over the video is standard for all media players, users with hearing disabilities can be sure to benefit from packaged media with this type of subtitling with any brand or model of DVD, Blu-Ray or HD-DVD player. Remember these three points to cement your standing as a CE guru. Any television that is bigger than 13-inches built since 1993 will display captions from an antenna signal as long as captions are present. Any video source connected to a TV through HDMI or component interfaces requires the source to decode and render the captions. Some sources, such as DVD players with captioned discs, connected to a TV by coax or yellow composite video connector “play” captions that the TV can decode and display. • OCTOBER 14-17, 2007 HOTEL DEL CORONADO | SAN DIEGO, CA CEA Events 2007 CEA Industry Forum October 14–17 San Diego, CA T&S Fall Forum October 15–19 San Diego, CA EHX Fall 2007 November 6–9 Long Beach, CA Future of Television Forum November 8–9 New York, NY CES New York Press Preview featuring CES Unveiled @ NY November 13 New York, NY CONNECTIONS™ Europe: Strategies for Digital living Markets December 4–6 Berlin, Germany For more information on CEA events, visit www.CE.org or call (703) 907-7600. 2008 CES Unveiled: The Official Press Event of the International CES January 5 Las Vegas, NV The International CES January 7–10 Las Vegas, NV CEA Winter retreat February 7–9 Park City, UT 2008 PArA Conference March 11–13 Orlando, FL EHX Spring 2008 March 11–15 Orlando, FL Digital Patriots Dinner April 2 Washington, DC CEA Washington Forum April 2–3 Washington, DC T&S Spring Forum May 19–23 Nashville, TN Connect with Industry Leaders at the 2007 CEA Industry Forum Don’t miss these key executives and industry experts addressing topics important to the growth of your company and the industry. • Mary Bermel, Yahoo! • Russell Brumfield, Whiff Solutions • Ken Eisner, Shop.org • Mike Fidler, Digeo Inc. • Chip Heath, best-selling author • Martin Lattman, Johns Hopkins University School of Business • Steven Little, business growth expert and best-selling author • Geoff Livingston, Livingston Communications • Julie Livingston, Toy Industry Association • Mitchell Mauk, Mauk Designs • Lon Otremba, Access 360 Media Inc. • Kumu Puri, AccentureEd Rice, THX • Daniel Simpkins, Hillcrest Laboratories Inc. • Larry Winget, television host, bestselling author and motivational speaker • Barney Wragg, EMI Group Register Today www.CE.org/industryforum www.ce.org IF Vision ads 1/3 #.indd 2 September/October 2007 31 8/15/07 9:37:4 http://www.CE.org/industryforum http://Shop.org http://www.CE.org http://www.CE.org/industryforum http://www.ce.org
