Vision - September/October 2007 - (Page 4) in thiS iSSue on the consumer electronics horizon T Global Opportunity President and CeO he turbulent market swings wildly in both directions these days, not only in the U.S. but in Europe and Asia as well. Each day brings more news to remind us that we really are a global society. Globalization is no longer just a buzz word but a reality. What do these uncertain times mean for the CE industry? While obviously no one can predict the future with pinpoint accuracy, we decided to leverage our in-house resources and provide a new column to analyze market trends called The Economist, written by CEA’s Shawn DuBravac. He takes a look at the drop of the dollar and what it may mean for your business going forward. And while the markets are reacting to real and perceived threats, there also are lucrative new opportunities coming out of the woodwork. For example, IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) is enticing many companies to cross former boundaries to offer the much-touted trifecta of services—voice, Internet and TV. This triple play of bundled services may be the sweet spot for cable, satellite and telcos to provide unimagined offerings. Will IPTV live up to its hype and change the competitive landscape with new on-demand services? Another area that bears watching are PMPs (portable media players)—handheld audio/video players with a color LCD or OLED screen. Of course, everyone is familiar with the most famous PMP, the Apple iPod and now the iPhone. But this fall a new slew of PMPs, based on Microsoft’s next-generation PlaysForSure software will make it easier to transfer content between PMPs and to customize and personalize the device. As globalization brings worldwide consumers together, CE Vision looks at the consumer electronics market in India. In a country of nearly one billion people, about 58 percent of the population is under the age of 20. That means India’s youth sector is nearly double the entire population of the U.S. With India’s 18 official languages, reaching this market is not easy. Read Gary Arlen’s story to find out how CE companies now operate, market and advertise in this vast country and the possibilities for your business. Our cover interview with Accenture Chairman and CEO Bill Green also highlights the global nature of the industry as he heads a company with more than 160,000 people in 49 countries. Clearly he has some unique insights on how companies can operate more effectively in the rapidly changing international environment. Also TechSpeak by Murray Slovick looks at the market for NAND flash, expected to surpass $13 billion this year, and C4’s Susan Schreiner looks at some of the products to help you stay productive when you’re traveling or delayed. I hope to see you at CEA’s Industry Forum October 14–17 in San Diego and also at the CE Hall of Fame Dinner where we will honor some of the industry’s finest leaders. It’s a wonderful evening.
