Vision - September/October 2008 - (Page 7) industry are reliant on healthy and robust international trade. Technology and trade go hand-in-hand in ensuring a bright future for the U.S. As Ben Bernanke, the current chairman of the Federal Reserve recently put it, “hindering the adoption of new technologies or inhibiting trade flows would do far more harm than good, as technology and trade are critical sources of overall economic growth and of increases in the standard of living.” Technology and international trade have had a pronounced effect on the U.S. economy. These effects extend well beyond just the jobs reliant on the industry’s health and the output and value-add created by these workers. The tangible effects of the industry are evident as the PWC report makes clear. But technology also has driven productivity gains and increased living standards across the U.S. specifically and the global economy in general.
