Two form factors are anticipated: a stand-alone femtocell box that connects to a home network router or gateway (which in turn is hooked to the Internet), and an all-in-one box that combines a femtocell, modem and router or gateway. Allen Nogee, principal analyst at InStat in Scottsdale, Ariz., says a typical femtocell will support the use of three or four cell phones simultaneously. In addition, experts anticipate that the operating range of the femtocell will be restricted to stay within the home, and it is likely that only those mobile phones registered to household members will work with it—for example, cell phones enrolled in a “family plan”. Motorola, Samsung, Thomson, Netgear, Linksys and Cisco are probable makers of these femtocell devices, according to Nogee. The result of a femtocell: full signal strength on the cell phone and the ability to connect the phone to the home’s Internet connection, to surf the Web, download music and videos, and even to make or receive calls routed through a so-called VoIP line, bypassing the cell phone service provider’s network of neighborhood cell towers.
