Vision - November/December 2007 - (Page 4) iN this issue on the consumer electronics horizon The Holidays and CES he sky is black outside my window as I’m flying back to D.C. from CEA’s Industry Forum. The city lights below shine like a sea of twinkling stars—as if the sky and the earth have flipped. Speaking of stars, I’m in awe of the leaders that were inducted at the CE Hall of Fame dinner. The phenomenal group of headliners that were on hand to accept their awards included: Dr. Amar Bose, Bill Crutchfield, Steve Sasson, Dick Schulze and the German team from the Fraunhofer Institute—Dr. Karlheinz Brandenburg, Dr. Heinz Gerhäuser and Dr. Dieter Seitzer. To be in the midst of such strong leaders with strategic vision is humbling and inspiring. I encourage each of you to participate in the nomination process for the 2008 class. Please submit your top choices for the CE Hall of Fame by visiting www.CE.org. The judging will take place in February in New York. The holidays are rapidly approaching, and in this industry, we all know what that means— CES is almost here. This pre-CES issue of Vision features a special section on CES Unveiled@ NY. It looks at some of the new innovative companies that will display their products and technologies during the CES New York Press Preview in November. Media and exhibitors will get a first-hand peek at what these companies are bringing to market and so will you when you read the special insert. What’s more, our 2008 CES Technologies to Watch feature includes a comprehensive list of the CES TechZones. Rob Calem also looks at femtocells, new ways to link home A/V devices and HDMI. Another familiar sight at CES are the hundreds of LCDs, plasmas, rear-projection and CRT displays that blanket the show floor. Allan Richter checks out the flat-screen market and found a new market opportunity in the display and A/V areas—in a surprising venue— mega churches. TFCinfo says $4.6 billion was spent on audio equipment for the church market in 2006 with 32 percent growth forecast by year-end 2007. Vision’s international coverage turns to Eastern Europe—an area that shows promise but also has challenges to consider when expanding your business. Plus CEA Economist and Professor at George Washington University Shawn DuBravac examines some recent CE mergers and acquisitions and privatization deals that total hundreds of billions of dollars. Time to get your comfortable shoes ready and map out your must-see areas in your MyCES planner for CES (www.CESweb.org), but first, Happy Holidays!
