Vision - November/December 2008 - (Page 4) iN this issue on the consumer electronics horizon A Look Ahead s I write this, it’s just a few days until the election, and the uncertainty is palpable. Tuesday will mark an end to the nonstop campaigning that has been going on for the last 22 months. And for that, I will be grateful, regardless of who wins. After the election, our new President will be confronted with a host of problems largely out of his control. Clearly, we are in rocky times, most agree we are in a recession and the future is unclear. But despite the gloomy headlines, at CEA’s Industry Forum in October, 12 new members were inducted in to the CE Hall of Fame. It was an uplifting evening and a reminder of the innovation the CE industry contributes to the world. On hand to accept awards were: Marty Cooper and Donald Linder, honored for developing the first mobile phone 25 years ago; Joe Clayton for his leadership at RCA and Sirius and on DBS; Eddy Hartenstein, who through DirecTV led the industry to DTV; Warren Lieberfarb, who brokered the unified DVD format; Richard Sharp, who built Circuit City into a retail powerhouse and asked the industry to work with the now beleaguered company to help it stay afloat. Ken Kutaragi traveled from Japan to accept his award for the development of the PlayStation gaming consoles. Family accepted awards for Dr. Fritz Sennheiser for his microphones and headphones; Jewel and David Abt, founders of Abt Electronics; Dean Dunlavey, who argued the Betamax case before the Supreme Court; and journalist Hans Fantel. The CE industry is full of creative minds. If you know someone who should be recognized, go to www.CE.org to submit a nomination and view the rules. Nominations are accepted through November 28. The judging will take place in New York in February. Please contact me if you have questions. This issue of Vision is inspirational as well. Our cover story is on Sprint CEO Dan Hesse, who also is a visionary. But it was not the first time we had met. I first interviewed him in 1998 when he was president and CEO of AT&T Wireless and I was editor-in-chief of Wireless Business & Technology magazine. It was snowing in Kirkland that day and the airport closed—a memorable experience. Thinking in a unique way, Hesse announced flat rate pricing which was unheard of at the time. Now he has taken the all-you-can-eat pricing plan, one step further to include “Simply Everything”. Turn to page 10 to learn more. What’s more, CEA’s Economist Shawn Dubravac looks ahead with four predictions for the New Year, while Dave Arland looks back 10 years to the beginning of HDTV and at the innovation still to come. Vision also examines how companies can stay competitive in a global market with eco-friendly strategies, how XGP may boost gaming and spur other companies to follow, and ways for retailers to increase profits in tough times with accessories and service plans. We feature a special section on CES Unveiled and coverage on the CES TechZones as well. The International CES is right around the corner. I hope to see you there!
