Vision - November/December 2008 - (Page 41) CEAnewsline GSMA TechZone Shows ‘Always-Connected’ Devices For the future of mobile broadband devices, check out the GSM Association (GSMA) TechZone in the LVCC South Hall. A new GSMA-led initiative unites mobile operators, PC manufacturers and chipset providers to give consumers a range of “ready to run” mobile broadband devices, including notebook PCs. “Today, 16 of the world’s largest technology companies have committed to change the way people get online forever. This commitment is manifested in a service mark that we expect to see on several hundred thousand notebooks in the shops by the [2008] holiday season,” said Michael O’Hara, CMO of GSMA. The mobile broadband service mark will be placed on devices with pre-installed mobile broadband modules, allowing them to connect to the Internet whenever a 3G cellular network is available. Mobile broadband capable laptops will no longer be tethered to a Wi-Fi hotspot, allowing mobile speakers and products from such companies as Mattel, Sesame Workshop, PBS and Sprout. Kids@Play hopes to “infuse the industry with new blood,” says Robin Raskin of Living in Digital Times, and will feature more than 20 new products that “help kids become creative, innovative digital people.” Silvers Summit The Silvers Summit, also sponsored by Living in Digital Times and located in the Sands Expo and Convention Center, will showcase technologies dedicated to enriching the lives of the roughly 78 million baby boomers in the U.S. The Silvers Summit TechZone will feature lifestyle-specific technologies in healthcare, entertainment and robotics. The Silvers Summit also includes a conference on Thursday, January 8, with presentations, interactive demonstrations and speakers from the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP). Also present will be a “Boomer House of the Future”, sponsored by the Center for Aging Services and Technologies (CAST), that will showcase a room-by-room relationship between a boomer and technology. The CE industry has grown to be a part of nearly every aspect of our lives. From communication to learning, from entertainment to health, CE products work to improve lives in both the most imperceptible and obvious ways. These devices use high-speed packet access (HSPA) protocols for mobile connectivity out-of-the-box, without the need for additional hardware such as a dongle or antenna. The initiative is backed by 3 Group, Asus, Dell, ECS, Ericsson, Gemalto, Lenovo, Microsoft, Orange, Qualcomm, Telefónica Europe, Telecom Italia, TeliaSonera, T-Mobile, Toshiba and Vodafone. Kids@Play The Kids@Play Summit, successor to last year’s Sandbox Summit, focuses on the fun technologies marketed to today’s children. In addition to a Kids@Play TechZone located in the Sands Expo and Convention Center, a day-long conference on Friday, January 9, will look at disruptive technologies that are changing education for children worldwide. Kids@Play also examines the effects of technology on youth including new studies on mobile phone usage among youth.
