EVERYDAY HERO / ROUNDS Saving lives, one heart at a time This educator raises awareness about sudden cardiac death. heart conditions that might otherwise go undetected. The program saves lives by identifying students with deadly heart conditions. JENNIFER SHEA manages Beaumont Children's Student Heart Check program, which has screened more than 15,000 teens for life-threatening SPREADING THE WORD: My goal is to raise awareness of heart conditions in teenagers and save lives beyond the borders of Michigan. I recently traveled to California to help another hospital launch a similar screening program. THE GIG: Coordinating multiple free Student Heart Check screenings at schools helps me maintain connections with parents, teenagers and young adults affected by sudden cardiac death. I also helped launch a program to train students how to use an AED and perform CPR. And, I help with fundraising through Children's Miracle Network Hospitals. SAFETY FIRST: I'm also passionate about child passenger safety. It was an honor when the governor appointed me to serve on his Traffic Safety Advisory Committee. The other committee members work for state agencies. DUAL ROLES: I love my job because I can help save kids from the number one cause of medical-related deaths in athletes and the number one cause of injury-related deaths in children. HELPING FAMILIES: Parents don't realize their child could be at risk for a life-threatening heart condition. Helping families avoid tragedy is my life's work.
