Celebrating small victories
A surgical nurse talks about what it takes to do the job.
JENNY PAUL, RN, is an
operating room (OR) nurse at
American Family Children's
Hospital in Madison, Wisconsin.
THE GIG: Families may only
interact with me for five
minutes, but I will care for their
child during an entire surgery.
My colleagues and I perform
something akin to a wellorchestrated dance.
COMPASSIONATE CARE: My first
instinct is to send the family a
page to let them know everything
is okay. I know how worried they
are. I see it in their faces.

SHARP SKILLS: A good OR
nurse has what we like to call
"OR ears," meaning we have one
ear on the surgical field at all
times, hear the surgeon request
something, and are up to get it
before the surgical technologist
has a chance to ask for it.
IT TAKES A TEAM: As a Level
One trauma center, we see
complex and challenging
surgeries. We are good at them,
but I don't perform my job in
a vacuum. I have an amazing
team and multiple support staff
members who are critical to a
good outcome.

PROVIDING COMFORT:
I care for each child as if he
or she were my own. I comfort
patients if they're crying when
they wake up from surgery;
I pick them up and comfort
them like I know the parents
would. I rejoice in small
victories, like when a patient's
port is coming out after
chemotherapy. I grieve deeply
for families when life throws
a curve ball and a patient's
disease has progressed.
