Chautauqua County Visitors Guide 2009 - (Page 21) lakes and waterways With six lakes and approximately fifty miles of Lake Erie shoreline, there is no place in Chautauqua County more than twenty-five miles from open water. Windswept shores, sandy beaches and dramatic cliffs characterize the county’s northern border along Lake Erie. Ten miles inland, at 17.5 miles long and 1308 feet above sea level, lies Chautauqua Lake, one of the highest navigable bodies of water east of the Mississippi and the largest inland lake in western New York. Twenty miles southwest of Chautauqua lies Findley Lake formed from the spring fed ponds that drain into the West Branch of French Creek. To the north lie Bear and Cassadaga Lakes, each with its own intimate character. Rent a boat and enjoy fishing, sailing, waterskiing or touring on the water. Play in the sand on one of several public beaches. For canoeing or kayaking, enjoy the birds and wildlife along the Chadakoin River, Cassadaga and Conewango Creeks, and Conewango Swamp Wildlife Management Area. Fly fisherman will particularly like the tributary streams flowing into Lake Erie known as “steelhead alley”. take a class Chautauqua Golf Club 25-acre practice and teaching facility, ciweb.org, 716-357-6211 Golf School, Peek’n Peak Resort, pknpk.com, 716-355-4141 Ski and Snowboard School, Peek’n Peak Resort, pknpk.com, 716-355-4141 John R.
