Rarities include Harlequin Duck and Eared Grebe. Points of Interest: During the winter a nearby power plant keeps the harbor free of ice and attractive to many stop over species. Sheldon Trail Location: Titus Road to Summerdale Road, northeast of Sherman Habitat: Woodlands and wetlands Sightings: 175 species including the rarities Olive-sided Flycatcher, Yellow-bellied Flycatcher, Philadelphia Vireo, American Bittern, and 25 species of migrating and nesting warblers. Points of Interest: 5.5 mile segment of the Chautauqua Rails to Trails system recognized as one of the outstanding single site habitats in the region. Map Code: E11-E12 Point Gratiot on Lake Erie Location: Adjacent to Dunkirk Lighthouse Habitat: Wooded, lakefront Sightings: Orchard Oriole, Whip-poor-will, nesting Red-headed Woodpeckers, and over 30 species of warblers including Prothonotary, Prairie and Worm-eating. Points of Interest: One of the most visited regions in western New York for spring migrants. Facilities: parking, playground, picnic shelter, restrooms Map Code: I4 Laurie A. Baer Trail Location: Plank Road, Route 29 north of Hartfield Habitat: Woodlands and wetlands Sightings: 50 species including Ruffed Grouse, six species of nesting woodpeckers, Virginia Rail, Hooded Merganser, Blue-winged Teal, and in the spring, Northern Waterthrush. Points of Interest: Mile long level trail in the Chautauqua Rails to Trails system on the right-of-way of National Grid Corporation. Series of beaver dams and habitats for other wildlife. Facilities: Parking available on Plank Rd. Map Code: F9 Roger Tory Peterson Birding Festival June 4-7, 2009 www.rtpi.org Ripley Hawk Watch Location: Various sites between Westfield and Ripley including Shorehaven on Rt 5, Parker, Creamery, and Belson Roads Habitat: Lake Erie escarpment Sightings: Hawks, eagles and vultures including Bald Eagles, Golden Eagles, Ospreys, Peregrine Falcons. Rarities include Swallow-tailed and Mississippi Kites, Ferruginous and Swainson’s Hawks. Non-raptor sightings include Whooping and Sandhill cranes. Points of Interest: From March 15 to May 15, the Ripley Hawk Watch observes the spring migration, posting daily observations on www.hawkcount.org. Observation sites are marked with signs.
