Upper elevations find nesting Blackburnian, Yellow-rumped, Magnolia, and Black-throated Green Warblers, Purple Finches, Dark-eyed Juncos, Golden-crowned Kinglets, Red-breasted Nuthatches and Brown Creepers. Points of Interest: Wildlife area covers 3000 acres and is shared with local hunters, especially during spring turkey season. Brokenstraw River and beaver ponds. Points of Interest: Dr. Peterson, a Jamestown native, authored the first practical field guide to the birds of eastern North America in 1934. Dedicated to the work of Dr. Peterson, the Institute is situated on 27 acres with relatively young trees, ferns, heaths, and wildflowers. Cusimano Westside Overland Trail Location: 24 mile trail running near Pennsylvania border in the Town of Harmony to Chautauqua Gorge Habitat: forests Sightings: Hermit Thrush, Pileated Woodpecker, Hooded Warbler and Dark-eyed Juncos Points of Interest: Popular beginning spot is west of the village of Panama, NY on Route 474. Points of Interest: Multipurpose center and educational facility with a bird museum, rotating exhibits and observation decks. A 0.5 mile paved trail for wheelchair and stroller access to wetland areas. Wildflowers abound. Resident female bald eagle named Liberty. Facilities: Parking, educational center, restrooms, gift shop Map Code: M16 Habitat: Allegheny Plateau, woodlands Sightings: Over 15 species of hawks, migrating Bald and Golden Eagles, Peregrine Falcon, nesting Winter Wren, Blue-headed Vireo, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Red-breasted Nuthatch, Hooded Warbler and Hermit Thrush. Points of Interest: Open May 15 to Nov 1 with a sweeping view of Lake Erie Plain. Canada’s Ontario Province visible on a clear day. Excellent spot for spring migration and summer breeding for smaller birds. Site includes a mile long nature trail through 100 year old conifers with self-guided interpretive map.
