Chicago-Kent College of Law Viewbook - (Page 28) On the Law and Technology Professor Lori B. Andrews and Danielle Bochneak Professor Lori Andrews directs the Institute for Science, Law and Technology at Chicago-Kent and has been ranked among the National Law Journal’s “100 Most Influential Lawyers in America. She chaired a federal advisory ” commission on the Human Genome Project and was a primary reason that second-year student Danielle Bochneak chose Chicago-Kent. The two have drafted a bill before the U.S. Congress and co-authored comments on proposed patent guidelines. Danielle will spend the summer at the World Trade Institute in Bern, Switzerland, comparing U.S. and E.U. laws on gene patents. Prof. Andrews: It’s important to bring up the next generation of lawyers to deal with emerging technologies. The law tends to look backward. I’m trying to get the law to think about where technology is going. Danielle: Before I even started law school, I dropped off my résumé and asked to be a research assistant. Amazingly, Professor Andrews hired me. Prof. Andrews: Danielle helped draft proposed legislation to say that, just as it would be wrong to patent the alphabet, no one should be able to own the genetic alphabet and exclude others from using it. Patents used to be granted for inventions. Now they’re being granted for ideas. We co-wrote an article for Science about this and also an amicus brief for the U.S. Supreme Court. Now Congress is considering our position. Danielle: On a professional level, I’m seeing how policymaking actually works. On a personal level, I’ve seen that you can make a difference.
