Oh, boy W 75 Food for thought W hen deciding whether or not to circumcise their baby boy, many parents think about what is considered “normal.” As it turns out, “normal” is different depending on where you live. According to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the nationwide average is 56 percent of newborn boys, a number that has remained about the same for the past decade. Here’s the geographical breakdown from 2005: percent of newborn boys in the Midwest were circumcised. percent in the Northeast were circumcised. percent in the South were circumcised. 65 56 31 e’ve been hearing “breast is best” for years and it looks like the awareness efforts are paying off. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 77 percent of new mothers breastfeed for some amount of time, the highest rate in 20 years. Black infants’ rates increased the most, from 36 percent in 1993-1994 to 65 percent. The report is based on information about 434 infants from 2005 and 2006. percent in the West were circumcised.
