I recently had the occasion of traveling to Istanbul for a short but action-packed four-day escape. On board were the men behind CITY’s Fast Food column (among a few other endeavors): Jean-Georges Vongerichten, Greg Brainin, and Dan Del Vecchio. Knowing next to nothing about this historical city, I envisioned a scene from a ’60s James Bond movie with the very old culture mixing with the absurdly new. Turns out that was Istanbul in a nutshell and precisely what makes this destination so dynamic. Walk into the massive Blue Mosque, and you feel like you’re in the 1600s. Book one of 16 sleek rooms in the jewelbox hotel Hotel Ajia on the Asia side of the city, and you’ll find yourself in a modern idyll. In Istanbul, there are hidden treasures around every bend, through every door. One afternoon we were whisked into a small Turkish carpet boutique that somehow managed to stock 10,000 pristine examples of their ancient skill into what couldn’t have been more than a 10 foot by 10 foot space (some tips: don’t be afraid to haggle down the price and make sure to ask for tea while you browse). Of course, get four ultra-foodies in a city with cuisine as good as Istanbul’s, and you can guess how we spent most of our trip. Each morning began with Turkish eggs, and we then made our way over to the local markets, which offered enough regional spices and other specialities to make even Jean-Georges blush. Navigating the maze of vendors, we sampled anything and everything that intrigued us. Inevitably, we also reached for our cameras, knowing full well that we couldn’t bring the tastes or smells home with us, but at least we could try to capture the sights. Needless-to-say, none of our snapshots were quite worthy of this issue’s One City, Many Destinations travel photography competition, a collection of images that repeatedly make you wonder, how in the world did they manage to get that shot? And yet, maybe photographs like those are the rare, one-in-a-million shots (perhaps one-in-a-thousand for the pros). Maybe you can capture the essence of a city without taking a magazine cover–worthy shot. I’ll always have photos like the one above to help me remember my first time in Istanbul and I’m already looking forward to our next trip. I hope you keep traveling and shooting, too, and maybe, just maybe, you’ll strike gold and we’ll see one of your shots in next year’s contest.
