THE WINNING PHOTOGRAPHER Meet Konstantino Hatzisarros, winner of CITY’s ﬁrst-ever travel photography competition. Thessaloniki, Greece–born Konstantino Hatzisarros tried his hand at engineering, an MBA, and even six languages. “Then I quit all this,” he says, “and started selling postcards of New York City. Three million postcards so far, and counting.” Those postcards (www.psarisproductions.com) finance his trips around the world, which he takes about every two months. He estimates he’s traveling for more than 100 days every year. “I just love this. This is just so much more fun than working in an office everyday.” Hatzisarros says he entered the winning photo a half hour before the competition’s deadline. A few weeks later, still glowing from his win, Hatzisarros stopped by CITY’s office to drop off a high-resolution version of the cover shot and chat with the editors. CITY: So tell us about your photo. KONSTANTINO HATZISARROS: This is in Burma. Burma is an amazing place. It’s the longest standing dictatorship in the world. They don’t see too many tourists, maybe 120,000 a year—and most of them are from Cambodia or Thailand, like neighbors. So it’s really pure and it’s a photographer’s paradise. This is in Mingoon, which is near a city called Mandalay. It’s full of temples. There are millions of monks and tons of baby monks like this, walking around. You see them all the time. I had hurt my foot. I was sitting in these stairs and this guy started coming down. And you just looked up and there was the perfect shot? The one guy was coming down and I started taking pictures, and he was just looking at me like this, and the other just popped his head out. So the boy in the foreground wasn’t even there at first? Amazing. When you’re traveling, is your camera always with you? Are you always taking photos? When I travel like this, I get up at 6 o’clock in the morning, and I work until 8 o’clock at night, then I head back and have dinner, go to sleep. I’ll spend hours trying to make them forget me. What do you bring with you? My camera, an iPod, and Velcro, always. What camera do you use? I shoot with Nikons, from now on with Leicas. But my D2X is huge. It scares people. It’s a huge thing, so it’ll be good to have a small thing. Do you have a favorite part of the world? Brazil. There’s a freedom of life, of thinking in Brazil. It’s incredible.
