Do we revisit Design (a favorite Spring issue of ours), take on Dining again, or maybe tackle something entirely new? Very quickly the idea of an Arts & Entertainment issue gained traction—who can resist the glitz and glamour of Hollywood, after all? The issue that emerged, however, is not your typical worshipping of pop stars and blockbuster movies. In fact, we try to stay as far away from the red carpet as possible, instead taking a close look at two facets of the business we find fascinating: “performance,” in all its iterations, and “adaptation.” Where else to start but on the Great White Way, where we chat up Broadway leading lady Sutton Foster as she prepares to bow in the biggest musical of the season, Mel Brooks’ adaptation of his film classic Young Frankenstein. After listening to Foster describe some of the musical numbers and stealing a quick glimpse of Dr. Frankenstein’s laboratory at our photo shoot at the Hilton Theatre, we can’t wait to see how one of our favorite Brooks comedies translates to the stage. Of course, with tickets sold out through about 2016, we’ll try to report back to you on that sometime within the next decade. For those not in New York, we can’t recommend highly enough the Roundabout Theatre Company’s touring version of 12 Angry Men, whose cast we enlisted for “Not Guilty,” perhaps the most dramatic fashion story we’ve ever shot. The actors came straight from rehearsal to our photo studio, and practically picked up mid-scene where they had just left off. When the show comes to your city, make sure you’ve got a seat up front. Speaking of stirring performances, “Public Affairs” tells three wildly different but connected stories, as we examine how some of CITY’s favorite fields—like design, food, and books—take on an entirely new dimension when performed on a stage in front of a live audience. We also dip back into the fine art of adaptation, previewing an Oscar season in which every other film seems to be based off a very serious and highly acclaimed literary source, and we take a listen to a stunning new album with songs by 39 musicians and bands all inspired by the illustrations and poems of celebrated artist David Shrigley. With a lineup like that, I think it’s safe to say the A&E issue will have an encore next year.
