OUR FRIENDS PHILLIP TOLEDANO swears that he can do each and every yoga pose featured in his photo story “Elastique” (page 102). The regular CITY contributor was inspired to shoot the story by model Tara Stiles, whom he describes as both “incredibly bendy” and “incredibly gung-ho” about performing such extreme poses during a long day of shooting. While he’s not busy attaining yogic mastery, Toledano has been focusing lately on art projects; with exhibitions worldwide and a book in the works—on phone sex operators—he’s clearly no downward facing dog. Photographer PATRICIA HEAL and stylist MARTIN BOURNE are at it again in “The Understudies” (page 82), a sumptuous, back-stage story evoking Forties fashion and post-war melancholy. The frequent CITY contributors have been busy lately; Patricia’s work was recently exhibited at the Robin Rice Gallery in New York’s West Village, and Bourne continues to manage his ever-expanding beard. Regular contributor TIM McKEOUGH pulls double duty this issue. First up, he sits down with Sir Terence Conran at The Conran Shop to chat about about the design guru’s new book with Stephen Bayley, Design: Intelligence Made Visible (page 50). McKeough also documents a new twist on performance art, as top designers bring their craft to the masses on stage at Design Miami (page 56). Tim writes for Men’s Vogue, Surface, The New York Times, and Wired. ELYSSA DIMANT was so excited about the debut of her new City Life fashion column, “In Rogue” (page 36), that she was at her computer making last-minute final edits… the morning after her wedding. “I am an insomniac, for sure,” e-mailed the former Miss Elyssa da Cruz. “We got in at about 5:30 to our hotel downtown, and here I am, very much awake. And married. :-D” Elyssa’s first column looks at the re-emergence this season and next of 1930s starlet fashion, and will return each issue to examine how fashion moves from the designers’ imaginations to the runway to the city street (and back again). CITY newcomer MATT HOYLE had his hands full photographing the 12 Angry Men-inspired “Not Guilty” (page 70). Juggling a dozen Broadway actors, a full crew, and multiple days of shooting, it’s a wonder that the awardwinning photographer didn’t become the thirteenth angry man himself. Splitting his time between New Zealand and New York, Hoyle has shot for numerous magazines and advertising clients, including Rolling Stone, New York, and Sony. Look out for his first photography book, Encounters, in bookstores this fall. This issue marks the premiere of another new City Life column, food writer EVA HAGBERG’s “The Amused Bouche.” As a child in an organic-buying, co-op-shopping family, Hagberg developed a secret love for all things artificial, an obsession now finding great satisfaction in the cooking of top molecular gastronomists. In her first column (page 38), however, Eva discovers that not everyone is such a fan of the “fake food” movement. Look for more culinary insight each month as the Amused Bouche tastes her way through the country’s best restaurants and kitchens. 12 CI T Y
