they design to give investors an idea of what it will feel like. I did the model and everyone loved it! How are hotels and residences different? With hotels, you have to take into account the overall design and really make sure that everything is functional. Since you are dealing with so many rooms, you have to think about getting pieces that are commercially made and manufactured, while in a home you have the option to choose vintage or one-off pieces. Also, the life of a hotel room is typically seven to 10 years, so you have to make sure that it will hold up and really look great and stand the test of time. You are working on six hotels right now, in locations from the Middle East to China to India. What are your hotel design hallmarks? Kaleidoscopes: small, $1,395; medium, $1,795; large $2,195. Brass Hands, $1,495. I still get most of my jobs through word of mouth, so usually people will see a hotel that I designed and contact me to do their’s. They certainly don’t all look alike—right now I am working on some with really vibrant color and others with no color at all, just organic and monochromatic—so I’d say my hallmark is more about the unexpected. I think the use of furnishings is important, and I like to make sure everything looks handpicked. I do not shop out of catalogs, period. I usually pull from auctions, or places I travel to in Europe, so it is a very unique, one-of-a-kind feel. You were recently invited to open a showroom on the highly-coveted Decorative Home floor of Bergdorf Goodman. How did a girl from L.A. get so lucky? Well, two-and-a-half years ago they called me to design their premier restaurant BG—they had never had a restaurant before, and so it was very exciting to be an L.A. designer doing this iconic New York Bergdorf restaurant. Then, this past March, they said they would love for me to do my own space. The first thing I thought was, What am I going to put in it? Through all of my residential and hotel work I’ve designed a lot of custom pieces, so I decided to stick with that—I made limited editions of my pieces for Bergdorf. There are only five or ten of each item. What pieces should we keep an eye out for? P R O D U C T: P H OTO S B Y M A R K E D WA R D H A R R I S . The showroom, which I designed, is about 325 square feet, and every season I will come out with a new collection. The pieces from this initial collection are all equally luxurious—I have pieces made of marble, gold, silver, and ceramics. The design is very lux; it is all about scale and color and texture. My favorites are the marble foot and the marble silhouette of the face, but I love everything. I just design what I like and what I feel is cool and interesting. What is your ultimate luxury? A vacation with my family and time in general. An amazing sleep is definitely a luxury, and I always buy haute bed linens. I get to travel so much and see new things, which is certainly a luxury. I am going to India in January and I am really looking forward to the inspiration that will come from it. Good design is luxury; it makes life a little more sexy and interesting. Confetti Bowl, $995.
