itself. Acclaimed underwater photographer Howard Schatz’ sensual and provocative images can be viewed off the main lobby via plasma screens recessed in an undulating illuminated wall. Artist Allen Maertz has been crafting unique works since the 1970s and now his headboard art with flamboyant island foliage can be found and purchased at the hotel. Part of the brand’s future arts mission includes rotating exhibits with leading museums and fostering new discoveries such as the next generation of young Japanese artists. Upon entering the lobby, two red leather half circle sofas lead to “the money wall”: a pale blue background of money leaf and cedar branch incased in illuminated glass wall panels, meant to bring great wealth and good fortune to guests. A bold, orange palm tree canvas by local artist Isis Godfrey-Byrne hangs over the Crayola-crayon suede chairs and stools. You can submerge yourself in the vibrant public spaces but you can just as easily be entertained by the dramatic design elements in the privacy of your own sea-foam green room. Lie back on the ebony wood headboard, where you will find a signature orange-and-white “swoon pillow” designed by Los Angeles artist Gabrielle Jennings. Order a Nobu bento-box [see “Sushi Anyone?” at right] or a custom Halekulani cold menu, then enjoy a drink from the in-room wine bar. By early 2008, the eighth-floor pool area will offer guests cocktails and nibbles with panoramic views of the high-rise landscape of mid-century California Spanish-style buildings, not to mention those beautiful waves just calling your name. Sushi Anyone? One of the world’s most famous chefs, Nobu Matsuhisa, has set up shop at the Waikiki Parc, and no one seems to be happier than the Honolulu locals. “I’ve been going to Hawaii for more than 20 years,” says Matsuhisa. “I used to do a lot of charity work with Roy Yamaguchi and Alan Wong, so people know me here.” The menu at this latest venture initially featured all of Nobu’s signature dishes. But once the chefs, cooks, and service staff were fully trained, it was time to have some culinary fun, island-style. “We created some local dishes: ceviche with seafood, tomatoes, and Hawaiian pineapple,” Nobu says. “In the other restaurants, we don’t use the pineapple. So it’s still my signature dish but with local ingredients.” The stunning space was designed by celebrated architect David Rockwell, who has designed several other Nobu properties. “My feeling was this was the perfect place for Nobu Waikiki. It’s a top hotel, and it has a nice reputation,” says Matsuhisa, who also recognized the Waikiki renaissance. “Trump Towers and others are coming. Waikiki is undergoing a transformation and will not be the same in three or four years—it will have more energy, fashion, and young people.” His restaurant, for one, is certainly one of the island’s most sophisticated. “Most people who go out in Hawaii wear T-shirts and shorts but at Nobu Wakiki they dress up!” —CD This page: The entrance and lobby lounge at the Waikiki Parc.
