Peppermint. Ocean. Cloud.” And then there’s Paris: “Cigarettes … unfortunately. In a weird way, water because of the Seine and because of the almost constant clouds. Asphalt. Cleaned asphalt. Car exhaust.” We needed to cut his description of Rio for space, but here’s a snippet: “A mixture of tropical humidity and ocean breeze. Suntan lotion. Car exhaust. Heat off asphalt. Rio has a wonderful distillation of Third-World mustiness and the aged scent of 1950s Portugal that you get in the little linoleum-tiled supermarkets and the aging air-conditioning units.” Love that. Though it seems every major city these days is choking on car fumes, Burr’s descriptions reveal a more complex phenomena—that each city has its own personality, its own quirks, its own annoyances, and its own delights. These differences seem to manifest themselves not just in the smells of each city, but also in the people, the food, the design, and, perhaps most colorfully, the fashion.
