LONDON: EXHIBITION W SAN FRANCISCO China Design Now With the 2008 Olympics in Beijing ready to take the world stage and the recent development of the area surrounding the Great Wall, the world’s next great superpower is experiencing rapid economic and social development. As it begins to open its arms to global influences, China’s position as a new player in the design game is also not going unnoticed. On March 15, the Victoria & Albert Museum in London will unveil its spring exhibition, “China Design Now,” which focuses on the three expanding cities of Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen through the work of more than 100 designers. The exhibition encourages visitors to take a journey up the coast of China, beginning in Shenzhen, the manufacturing capital where the country’s contemporary graphic design began. The average age of a person living in Shenzhen is 27, and this young area is greatly influenced by an urban culture embracing fashion, music, and art through the Internet. Next, move up the coast to the fashion capital of Shanghai where a rise in the consumer society has led to a great interest in cosmetics, luxury retail, and glamorous clothing. Finally, embrace the architectural splendor of Beijing where Herzog & de Meuron’s National Olympic Stadium and the new airport designed by Foster + Partners are far removed from traditional Chinese structures. —RL The exhibition will remain open until July at the Victoria & Albert South Kensington.
