Trainer and author Kacy Duke’s toning tips will have you feeling good, both inside and out. IT’S THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN, WHERE YOU START TO WONDER THE MOVE: The Warrior III TARGET: This move strengthens and stretches you from head to toe, channeling toning energy through the shoulders, chest, core, hips, glutes, and thighs. THE BODY LOVE BENEFIT: There’s a real satisfaction that comes from no longer needing the balancing support of the gym staff, Duke says. Stand in the power position with your feet close together. Grasp your dowel with both hands and hold it at chest level, palms facing down. In one smooth motion, press the dowel straight overhead and lift your right knee straight out in front of you. Pull the dowel back down to chest level while leaning forward slightly and swinging your bent right leg behind you. Finally, push the dowel straight out, extend your right leg straight back, and dip slightly into your left leg. Pull the dowel back in, return to a standing position but without lowering your right foot, and immediately press into the next repetition. Complete a full set, then switch sides. THE MOVE: The Goddess YOU’LL FEEL IT: From your toes to your fingertips. This exercise makes every muscle buzz as it challenges stability, strength, and flexibility, all in one sweeping move. THE BODY LOVE BENEFIT: Duke says that this exercise is an emotional, spiritual and physical experience. Stand in the power position with your feet wider than shoulder-width apart. Hold your dowel overhead with your hands also positioned shoulder-width apart, palms facing forward. Bend to the right side, reaching toward the floor with the end of your dowel. Now, flip the dowel so that the end that was pointing toward the floor is now pointing toward the ceiling. From that position sweep the dowel to the left across the front of your body until you’re bent to the left side facing forward. Raise your body back to the starting position. Repeat full set, then switch sides. if your itsy-bitsy bikini or board shorts are going to look good on your body in just a few months. Rather than wait until the last second, CITY asked Equinox trainer and fitness consultant Kacy Duke to fill us in on her tips to getting in gear for the spring. Duke’s newest book, The Show it Love Workout, teaches us how to Workout celebrate the bodies we have, while working hard to get the bodies we want. So, you want to look like a gorgeous goddess or a hunky warrior when the weather starts to warm up? Check out Duke’s moves below, each of which require the use of a dowel, which is essentially a 4-foot long, ½-inch diameter rod. Don’t be afraid to use a broomstick if you are trying these out around the apartment.
