copEnhagEN toronto Clever designs by Toronto’s up-and-coming designers have forced the New York set to finally take notice of Toronto’s L’Oreal Fashion Week, inaugurated in 2001 as a showcase for top Canadian talent. Jayn Simpson’s headdresses are fantastical enough to have emerged from a Stephen Jones workroom, and Common Cloth should be commended for a luxe sensibility not unlike that of Michael Kors at his best. Yet it is NADA YOUSIF’s collection, fitted with taffeta variations of culotte shorts and pouf dresses that stood out on the Spring 08 runway. Yousif’s Claire McCardell-esque playsuits prove that our northern neighbors are implicit in the legacy of (North) American fashion. Copenhagen’s fashion fair dates back to 1964, though its current manifestation, officially dubbed Copenhagen Fashion Week by sponsor Danish Fashion Institute, is a production akin to New York’s Bryant Park. Copenhagen fashion is known as much for its color blocking and traditional Scandinavian prints as it is for radical fashion créateurs like Henrik Vibskov or Galliano-trained Nikoline Liv Andersen. BAUM AND PFERDGARTEN stands out as a Danish house built upon technical know-how and informed by a keen knowledge of fashion history. The duo’s hodge-podgy cable knits, silks, and clipped fur ensembles are equal parts lavish, trendy, and edgy. THE NEW F FA FASHION CITIES madrid For those of you who think the doe-eyed model Marina Perez is the best export Madrid has to offer, check out the amorphous forms and intuitive textile juxtapositions of designer Amaya Arzuaga. Arzuaga has presented in London and Milan, but Madrid’s recently renamed Pasarela Cibeles fashion week (established in 1984) has given her cause for a homecoming. The young designer’s work boasts more wearability than the avant-gardist explorations of contemporaries like José Miró, while still providing the flamboyant adventurism characteristic of Spanish fashion. sÃo paolo This Brazilian vacation destination has been hosting a fashion week full of brightly colored resort-y collections since 1995, but it is impossible to characterize São Paolo fashion without considering the artistry and ingenuity of ALEXANDRE HERCHCOVITCH. Where Alexandre’s peers exploit the coweling silk ruffle, the printed floral organza, even the cotton khaki ad nauseum, Herchcovitch works regularly with latex and vinyl. Infusions of exoticism and historicism have spiced up his playful collections in the past, but this season, he highlights his technical ability with a myriad of interpretations on the classic tuxedo.
