I’d spent the previous year in advertising art direction and branding, the longest period I’d been magazine-free in the last 13 years, and to be honest, I was missing it. When you spend more than a decade doing something, you become acclimated to its cycles, its vicissitudes, its peaks, and troughs; and for me, I missed the bursts and surges of creation, the flurry of thought and conceptualization, and the satisfaction and pride in seeing a brand-spanking new finished product every month or so that a magazine provides. Taking on a new project is like setting off on a road trip, and I was more than ready to hit the road. So our conversation was brief: I said yes, then cleared the decks and moved into the CITY offices at the beginning of this year. There were big shoes to fill — Fabrice Frere had been creative director for the last seven years, and had steered the ship well, winning awards and ensuring the magazine’s place on the cultural map. He’d also headed a small, tightknit, dedicated, and talented team, who’d have to get used to a different face in the small office off the side of the edit room. And, of course, there would be a redesign. This is something you don’t enter into lightly, but it was time for a fresh coat of paint, so we set to work. We also brought a new fashion director on board. Julie Ragolia and I worked together a few years back at the Fader, and she has contributed to many publications, including international editions of W and Vogue, and Interview and Vanity Fair in the U.S. She also, along with photographer Zach Gold, launched Playground, a limited-edition volume of unbound fashion and art prints. Her vision is for CITY’s fashion to define what it is to be in a city; an amalgam of influences, from art and design to those you pass on the street. “City living is a constant and diverse inspiration,” she says. “And CITY’s fashion will reflect that.” So this issue is where it all comes together and where CITY’s next chapter begins. We have a new look and fashion stance, a recombining of talent both old and new, and hopefully a refreshing and stimulating magazine to guide you throughout the metropolis. This is the start of a long ride, and we’re glad you’re riding shotgun as we hit the gas. Copyright 2008 by Spark Media All rights reserved.
