CITY Issue 55 - (Page 12) CITY APRIL '08 / SPRING TRAVEL David Byun Although he spent 10 years as an art director, David Byun (“Prism Break,” pg. 116) found his calling as a fashion photographer, debuting his work in the May 2004 issue of Spanish Bazaar shooting Naomi Campbell. Now having worked with some 58 magazines from 18 different countries around the world, Byun is currently shooting covers for Korean W. He has also shot for commercial clients such as ESPN, Fiorucci, New Balance, Volvo, and MTV. For more information, go to www.davidbyun.com. OUR FRIENDS Amy Thomas Though writer Amy Thomas has lately been obsessed with all things French, she happily traded beret for bikini to visit Guanacaste with friend and photographer Aaron Alden (“Costa Utopia,” pg. 76). Unsuccessful in spotting Costa Rican monkeys as promised, she found the country inspiring nonetheless. Thomas writes about food, travel, and design for publications such as Departures, NYMag.com, and Metro newspaper. Alden, a fellow New Yorker, adds Guanacaste to his portfolio of Iceland, St. Martin, and Catalina. Grégoire Alexandre Trained at the Ecole Nationale de la Photographie d’Arles and Université Paris 1, Grégoire Alexandre still lives in Paris, where he shoots for such magazines as Libération, Wallpaper*, and Esquire UK, as well as ad work for Citroën and Sony. This month, Alexandre contributes the visually stunning “Lumber Support” (pg. 106). “I liked the idea of working on the pose, setting up the model in an environment that is at the same time helping, guiding, and limiting the positions,” he explains. Zach Gold After graduating from Parsons in 1995, Zach Gold (“Checkmate,” pg. 92) went on to be named the International Center of Photography’s “Young Photographer of the Year” in 2000 and is known for his photorealistic digital art. He recently co-created Playground with CITY Fashion Director Julia Ragolia. This limited-edition collection of art and fashion is now part of the permanent collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and is also available at exclusive boutiques worldwide. Lori Midson Denver-based and newly appointed Rocky Mountain News restaurant critic Lori Midson shares her love of Colorado festivals with CITY this month in “Who Needs Snow?” (pg. 62). Midson’s bylines can also be seen regularly in Sunset and Colorado AvidGolfer. The intrepid food lover, who once ate a AvidGolfer tarantula, says she’s looking most forward to the Food & Wine Classic at Aspen, which she describes as a “culinary red carpet celebrating the most talented chefs in America.” Raquel Pelzel Whatever you do, don’t call Raquel Pelzel a foodie. “Whoever coined that term should have their tongue filleted and served back to them on a bed of boiled carrots,” the Brooklynite says. A former editor at Cook’s Illustrated in Boston, she’s also written for Saveur and The Wall Street Journal and has collaborated on cookbooks such as Simply Delicioso with Ingrid Hoffman. This month, she picks out the best hot spots in the Florida Keys (“A New Chord,” pg. 68) — including the tastiest conch fritter around.
