It was total chaos t ying to keep up with all of the equests, but it was also inc edibly ne ve-w acking being in an empty apa tment.” Dolby bought the apa tment fou yea s ago and began wo king with inte io designe Miles Redd, whose style of making ooms both glamo ous and comfo table Dolby says he admi es. Redd tells me he wanted this oom to ep esent “easy comfo t — a cool, ai y place to b eak it down a e a ha d day’s wo k.” “Tom wanted the apa tment to be young, easy and comfo table,” Redd adds. “He wanted to be able to flop down and watch TV, but at the same time have f iends ove fo d inks, so we t ied to c eate multiple seating a eas in the living oom. t fi st, Tom had all the fu nitu e in the middle of the living oom a ound the fi eplace, but by pushing things out and not giving as much impo tance to the fi eplace, we we e able to get a lot mo e function out of the oom.” Redd custom-designed a white and gold ma ble–top Calacatta table fo a co ne of the oom, b ought in a zeb a skin ug f om Gala t Inte national T ade, and placed a Glo-Ball table lamp by B itish designe Jaspe Mo ison, pu chased at the Con an Shop, on the television table. Dolby also inco po ated into the oom his favo ite pe sonal pieces, which is quite a collection. Willem de Kooning and ndy Wa hol sketches a e scatte ed th oughout the apa tment, along with a signed Richa d vedon po t ait of T uman Capote, the fi st pai of Calvin Klein unde wea eve y p oduced, and a poste signed by the a tist Ch isto. Dolby has ecently also begun wo king with inte io designe David Cafie o, who has completed inte io s fo Chloë Sevigny and novelist Michael Cunningham. Cafie o has b ought a slight nautical theme to the apa tment, and is also wo king on the w ite ’s summe home in Wainscott, N. . It’s Cafie o’s classic, p eppy me ican style that fi st att acted Dolby to the designe ’s Sixth venue shop, whe e they fi st met. In addition to Cafie o’s shop, Dolby likes to find new inte io ideas at Thomas O’B ien’s e o sto e in SoHo and the D&D building. Now in his fully fu nished apa tment, Dolby is wo king on his next novel, a contempo a y sto y based on a family living at thei Califo nia summe house.
