CITY MAY & JUNE '08 / DESIGN Vincent Skeltis Photographer and artist Vincent Skeltis pushed his unique approach to portraiture to extremes for CITY’s cover fashion story, “Face Value” (pg. 98). “This shoot was as challenging and gratifying as any I’ve ever done,” Skeltis says, “and the entire team of contributors deserves as much, if not more, credit for pulling it off.” Skeltis makes art and mayhem in his OUR FRIENDS Brooklyn studio, and is currently working on a book of portraits shot on 4x5 Polaroid film. Ryan Pﬂuger First-time CITY contributor Ryan Pfluger spent a weekend crisscrossing Brooklyn to photograph “Runaways” (pg. 106). “It was pretty cold, so the boys were a little cranky being in shorts,” he says. A recent graduate of the School of Visual Arts MFA program, Pfluger describes his work as focusing on the “strong, vulnerable connection between the individual, their sense of self, their surroundings, and their bodies.” The New York native has also contributed to The New York Times Magazine, Details, Out, and Paper. Paper Benedict Redgrove Well-traveled and self-taught British photographer Benedict Redgrove captures the grandeur of Volkswagen’s Wolfsburg, Germany, factory in “Think Big” (pg. 86). “The Wolfsburg plant is massively impressive because it’s, well, massive,” Redgrove says. “The plant was built to have an incredible presence, power, and architecture, designed to inspire and create a sense of rule that you are part of a bigger machine.” Eric C. Shiner New York City–based curator and art historian Eric C. Shiner’s specialization in Asian contemporary art often sends him gallery hopping all around Japan. For “Tokyo Rising” (pg. 68), he brought his favorite contemporary finds to Tokyo-based photographer Kenji Aoki, whose strength in bringing beauty to ordinary objects is apparent in this levitating design portfolio. Shiner says he is still recovering from his latest trip to Tokyo, where a long night of drinks ended with friends forcing him to karaoke David Bowie’s “China Girl.” Roger Joseph Having worked as a branding consultant for Levi Strauss, J.Lindeberg, and Paul Stuart, and as a publicist for Style.com, Martin Margiela, and Costume National, Roger Joseph has a fine-tuned knowledge of menswear, and shares it with us in his first story for CITY, “Welcome to the Boys Club” (pg. 46). “I was struck by how gracious these designers were with their time. Being a fashion entrepreneur requires a great deal of stamina, fortitude, and, in the case of Victor Glemaud, some clairvoyance.” Lane Coder Well known for incorporating a fine-art sensibility into his fashion photography, Brooklyn-based Lane Coder chose to take it one step further in this issue’s “Intimate Relations” (pg. 116), a photo portfolio inspired by the work of South African painter Marlene Dumas. Coder’s work has also been featured in the pages of Vogue, The New York Times Magazine, and Surface, and in the work of advertising agencies such as Ogilvy and Mather and Saatchi & Saatchi. 12 CITY TY
