Clover RE: DESIGN Receiving the shipment of advanced copies of each new edition of CITY is always one of the most exciting days of an issue’s life cycle. After lugging the boxes up a flight of stairs, we tear open the closest stack and quickly flip through the fresh copies, discovering how months of brainstorming, editing, writing, shooting, and designing ultimately manifested itself on the printed page. Last month’s arrival of the Travel issue was particularly noteworthy as it marked the debut of our top-to-bottom redesign. We were all thrilled to finally hold CITY’s new look in our hands; I told the editorial team that the magazine looked like a room that had just received a fresh coat of paint. Of course, creatives that they are, the buzz in the office quickly gave way to more important matters — namely, figuring out what small tweaks needed to be made for the next issue. The changes they foresaw would be barely noticeable to the untrained eye, but would be critical to the overall, lasting success of the redesign. It probably wasn’t a coincidence that this process all unfolded as we embarked on production of our annual Design issue, which you now hold in your hands. Although in these pages you’ll find products, buildings, interior spaces, and fashion all in their “final,” ready-for-the-public states, I can’t help but wonder how much designing and re-designing and re-re-designing went into each item’s creation. Much like magazines, design studios — cluttered with sketches and models and pie-inthe-sky dreams — are places where ideas suddenly spark to life, get bounced around for days, then are tossed away, resurrected, tinkered with, and ultimately fine-tuned until someone smart says, “Okay, enough — let’s put it out there and see what people actually think.” The home renovation is perhaps the ultimate redesign. Over the years, our apartments and houses become playgrounds for trying new designs: we add and subtract, rearrange and reconsider, always curious to hear friends’ opinions when they come over for a dinner party. Then comes the moment when the radical idea of a complete reno becomes the only topic of conversation at the kitchen table: “What if we re-did the whole place?” And before we even get the dishes to the sink, visions of our dream homes overtake us. Armed with the confidence to welcome change, we realize that redesigning is as essential a part of the process as the initial design itself. And what better place to start than with a fresh coat of paint? Copyright 2008 by Spark Media All rights reserved. Reproduction, in whole or part, without permission is prohibited.
