CITY Issue 57 - (Page 19) Go for the Gold FIT: OLYMPIC GAMES As you watch the world’s greatest athletes hurdle, swim, and flip their way to the podium this summer, remember that you too can train like an Olympian and achieve optimum results. Phoenix Carnevale, group fitness instructor at Equinox Fitness, suggests these exercises to get you working out as if you’re competing for the gold. VOLLEYBALL Bump, set, and spike your way to volleyball perfection by doing squat thrusts. This full-body exercise improves core strength and anaerobic conditioning while giving you a sharp bursts of energy. Start in a standing position and then squat down so that your hands are placed on the floor. Kick your legs back so they are behind you and you are in the “up” position of a push up. Squeeze your abdominals and glutes in this plank position to strengthen your core and several spinal muscles. Then once again jump your legs back under you returning to a squat position again. Spring up as high as you can into a full jump, extending your arms high and reach for the sky (or the ball). Make sure to land softly. Complete the move by returning once again into your squat position so you are ready to kick your legs back to complete the second rep. TRACK & FIELD GYMNASTICS To get the strength and balance of gymnast, try V-Ups for power and core strength. Laying flat on the floor with your legs straight, hold your arms above your chest, and point your fingers upward. Fold your body upward by lifting your legs off the floor and stretch your arms toward your toes, while consciously contracting your abdominal muscles. Pause for a short time, and return to starting position. For the speed of a sprinter, the dumbbell lunge will strengthen your hamstrings for sprinting, running, balance, and push off. Stand tall with your feet hip-distance apart and grasp a dumbbell in each hand with your palms facing inward; point your toes facing forward. Slowly inhale and step one leg forward, keeping your knee above your ankle. Drop your back knee 2 inches above the floor. Exhale and push yourself back to the starting position off your front leg. Repeat for the desired number of repetitions, then repeat the exercise stepping your other leg forward. //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Whey Cool FOOD: LUCY'S WHEY Hamptons-goers have another reason to “say cheese” this summer, and it has nothing to do with the influx of paparazzi to the East End. Locals Catherine “Lucy” Bodziner and Lucy Kazickas recently opened Lucy’s Whey, a tiny cheese shop in East Hampton. The shop stocks a rotating selection of American artisanal cheeses, as well as products from small-name brands like Tom Cat Bakery and SchoolHouse Kitchen. And while their fromages come from near (Catapano Dairy in Peconic, N.Y.) and far (Juniper Grove Farm in Oregon), they share a commitment to freshness, high quality, and sometimes even limited supply (so the Thistle Hill Farm Tarentaise that you bought last weekend might be replaced with the Sweet Grass Dairy Gouda come Friday). Their passion for cheese is clear, so it’s surprising that the owners bonded not over Brie, but basketball, their sons’ chosen sport. Bodziner had been selling cheeses at the East and Westhampton farmers markets under the LUCY’S WHEY, PHOTO BY JOHN MUSNICKI. moniker Lucy’s Whey, so when the two discovered — while cheering on their sons from the bleachers — that they had cheese, and a name, in common, the brick-and-mortar outpost was born. The red- and yellow-striped store has been open since February, but is finally ready for its big summer debut with even more cheeses (including milky mozzarella made daily) as well as farmfresh eggs from Mecox Bay Dairy, made-to-order tarts from local baker Bo Parsons, and Marlin Dip direct from Montauk. — MF 80 N.
