CITY Issue 57 - (Page 30) CITY LIFE / TEMPORARY CONTEMPORARY UNDER THE COVERS If you can’t own all the paintings, sculptures, and installations that you enjoy, a number of vivid art books scheduled for release this summer will make a great addition to your library. Bill Powers reads — and recommends. ABOVE: PLYWOOD BY JAY GARD. AT LEFT: WILL COTTON’S TAFFY FOREST M y friend Natalia ager Sacasa, who uns the Luh ing ugustine Galle y in Manhattan, likes to say that he a t book lib a y is a substitute fo the a t collection she wishes she had on he walls. I totally get it and am a bit of a book junkie myself. To help justify the habit (and also because I’m a huge fan), I ecently edited Rachel Feinstein’s fi st monog aph, published by ta SIZ. James Frey w ote the essay and Rachel’s f iend Sofia Coppola did the & . I hope you’ll ead this plug and go buy a copy ight away. I guess you could say the e was a slight confl ict of inte est on my pa t in editing the book since my wife and I own one of Rachel’s exquisite d awings, but in whateve wo k I’m employed, if the e isn’t some confl ict involved, I feel as if I haven’t pushed the envelope fa enough. nd honestly, what diffe ence does it make? C onyism, let me tell you . . . it ain’t what it used to be. few othe a t books you should check out a e Olafur Eliasson’s ove sized Taschen volume, 30 CITY TY Studio Olafu Eliasson, ch onicling his sidewinde of a ca ee to date. I bought one of the limited signed-and-numbe ed editions with the speciallydesigned wate d oplet cove . If you caught Eliasson’s ecent Museum of Mode n t exhibition, “Take ou Time,” o witnessed his “New o k City Wate falls” p oject in the East Rive , I can’t see how you won’t get on the bandwagon. This fall, Taschen is also eleasing titles dedicated to the wo k of Christopher Wool and Neo Rauch, both of which I highly ecommend. Rauch is widely conside ed the leade of the Leipizig School of Painting and has a kick-ass pai of shiny pu ple Lanvin lace-ups, which he b eaks out on ext a-special occasions. t a lectu e in May, he p edicted that the second wave of Leipzig a tists infilt ating me ica will include significantly mo e female a tists; howeve — and I’m so y, Neo — the one I’m most inte ested in is a fo me assistant of Tom Sachs’ named Jay Gard, a yea -old sculpto who just had his fi st solo show at Half Galle y, on Manhattan’s Lowe East Side, / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / ///// ANYONE WHO SAW TOM SACH'S INSTALLATION AT LEVER HOUSE THIS SUMMER CAN ATTEST TO HIS ABILITY TO GET WET WITHOUT BEING WATERED-DOWN. WILL COTTON’S “TAFFY FOREST” COURTESY OF MARY BOONE GALLERY, NEW YORK. JAY GARD’S “PLYWOOD” PROVIDED BY JAY GARD whe e I’m one of the co-owne s. Speaking of Sachs, he once told me that talent is like hot peppe — a little is all you need and the eal t ick is how you tease it out. I think he was making a point about ha d wo k and dete mination, two qualities almost antiquated in today’s pop-cultu e calculus. But anyone who saw Sach’s installation at Leve House this summe can attest to his ability to get wet without being wate ed-down. He fab icated, among othe wonde s, a giant Hello Miff y fountain whe e wate flowed f om the eyes like an infi nite st eam of tea s. It eminded me of the fountains at Ve sailles, while staying t ue to his own late– th centu y iconog aphy. Sachs is now pa t of a two-pe son show at The Baldwin Galle y in spen, up th ough Labo Day. The othe a tist on display the e is the painte Will Cotton, who’s known fo his immaculate Candyland-inspi ed canvases. Cotton ecently unveiled a commission he did fo the a t cha ity Rx t at St. Jude Child en’s Hopsital in Memphis. The non-p ofit asked him and fellow a tist Rob Pruitt to do eight massive paintings fo the kids’ cafete ia so they have something cool to look at du ing thei meals. I was e-mailed pictu es f om the opening and it b oke my hea t in the best way possible to see sick kids sta ing (and smiling) at these delightful spangley-boa d pandas P uitt has c eated. I hope you all come to the Rx t Ball in Novembe and help suppo t a fantastic a t cha ity. Fo mo e info mation, go to www. xa t.net. http://www.rxart.net
