Every day around 1 p.m., a few members of the CITY team and I make our usual pilgrimage to ﬁnd lunch. There’s less than a 4 percent chance that we’ve actually reached an agreement on our destination when we leave the ofﬁce, and about a 7 percent chance that we’ve made any progress by the time we’ve walked a few hundred feet south to the corner of Mercer and Prince streets: the dreaded Corner of Indecision. That’s where the deliberation, the stand-offs, the battles take place. To our east, pizza from Ray’s, sushi from Dean & DeLuca, or a “working lunch” on the boss at Lure beckon. Straight ahead, Fanelli’s soup lady or the salad guys at Café Duke await our inevitable returns. To our west, there’s a sandwich at Olive’s, a burrito from the Calexico cart, or a lunch special at Peep. If we get really desperate, we reverse our tracks and head back up to Houston to “eat fresh” at a sub shop that shall not be named. Options galore (sort of), and yet not a decision to be made. There are days where we spend more time on that corner debating than we actually spend eating whatever we ﬁnally get. Okay, time to confess: I’m mostly to blame. All right, entirely to blame. I’m the worst kind of picky eater — I both refuse to eat certain foods and routinely reject trusted dining options on the excuse of being bored with them. When I haven’t sworn off Olive’s for an undisclosed period of time, for example, I always get the grilled marinated chicken on focaccia with tomato, watercress, and chipotle mayo. Except that when I ﬁrst started at CITY as an intern three-and-ahalf years ago, I ordered it without the tomato, without the cress, and without the mayo. Over the intervening years, however, I’ve added each accoutrement one by one, mostly on the advice of my CITY lunch mates: “You don’t like chipotle mayo? Have you ever even tried it?” They’re also good at insisting that I either get over my objection to certain spots, or I can enjoy my lunch alone. What are friends for? That notion of stepping outside one’s culinary boundaries on the advice of others is a common theme in this issue — whether it’s choosing sake over beer with dinner tonight or experimenting with a strange vegetable from the CSA. My new rule of thumb: If someone I trust tells me to try something, I try it. If I love it, it’s my goal to then introduce them to a new dish or trusted spot. And if I hate it? Well, next time, lunch is on them, and I get to decide where we’re going. A ﬁnal, bittersweet note: With that delicious photo above and with these words, Photo Editor Anthony Cross and I ﬁnish up our very last issue at CITY (this will also be the last editor’s letter — look for a CITY website preview in September). It’s been a joy for both of us to share with you the ideas and experiences; people and places; sights, sounds, and tastes of the good city life these past few years. We’re leaving CITY in very good hands, and hope you have as much fun reading this last issue of ours as we had making it.
