CITY Issue 58 - (Page 14) CITY SEPTEMBER '08 / FASHION Mick Rock Often referred to as “the man who shot the seventies,” music photographer Mick Rock spent the better half of that decade as the official David Bowie photographer, and was instrumental in such classic images as Joan Jett’s I Love Rock ’N Roll album cover. Rock, who shot “Mates” (p. 82), has had his work featured in museum exhibitions from Tokyo to Berlin. His latest book, Exposures: A 35-year Retrospective, is due out later this year. OUR FRIENDS Ken Courtney Ken Courtney isn’t just a designer, he’s an artist. His menswear line, Indulgences, featuring a golddipped pair of Nike Dunk high-tops, earned him a spot in SFMOMA’s permanent collection. His other contributions to the fashion and art worlds include the Ju$t Another Rich Kid clothing line, this.hearts. on.fire (www.thisheartsonfire.com) pop culture blog, Starfucker tees, and Paparazzi, a performance piece at the Landmark Terminal. For this issue, he takes a closer look at the similarities in men’s and women’s collections in “Behind Every Man (Is a Good Woman)” (pg. 74). Angela Cravens Raised in the sleepy surf town of Leucadia, California, Angela Cravens is now a Brooklyn-based writer who writes about travel, art, and culture for Metro, Vibe, Page Six Magazine, Anthem, and Missbehave, among other publications. She is also former executive editor at TRACE Magazine. This month, Craven introduces CITY readers to glamorous Deitch Projects Gallery Director Nicola Vassell in “Prima Gallerina” (pg. 54). Poppy de Villeneuve While British photographer Poppy de Villeneuve (“Vagrant Saints,” pg. 102), has lived in the U.S. for only two years, she has already seen more of it than most American’s would ever want to. During a recent photo shoot for Wellensteyn coats, de Villeneuve spent 12 days traveling to 40 U.S. cities and towns, snapping pictures in the mountains, deserts, and cornfields. “I am looking forward to more visits to Idaho and Nebraska to photograph the truckers and farmers next to their silos,” she says. De Villeneuve’s photographs have appeared in Vogue, Telegraph Magazine UK, Guardian Magazine UK, MICK ROCK PHOTO BY PATI ROCK. ANGELA CRAVENS PHOTO BY MALCOLM BECKFORD. and Nylon. Jeremy Kost Though Polaroid stopped making its instamatic cameras last year, they’re still the favored choice of photographer Jeremy Kost. Channeling Andy Warhol, Kost exposes the realities of the pop culture elite in compelling, unstaged photographs, sans stylists and make-up artists, for such publications as V Magazine, Japanese Vogue, Giant, and Flaunt. Kost brings that same spontaneity to “What Katie Did” (pg. 34). Meredith Fisher New York-based freelance writer Meredith Fisher used her superior sleuthing skills to track down designer/ fashion curator/photographer/editor Milan Vukmirovic for “The Ultimate Insider” (pg. 59). Fisher draws upon her varied experiences in cooking school, as a political consultant, and as a fashion editor in stories for such publications as WWD, Town & Country Travel, and Interview. 14 CITY TY http://www.thisheartsonfire.com
