CITY Issue 58 - (Page 24) ///// ACTION Scent of a Man FRAGRANCE: CARTIER A man can love cars and not smell like he’s been doused with gasoline. Cartier’s new men’s fragrance, Roadster (named after the popular men’s watch), blends cistus labdanum, patchouli, and vanilla for a surprisingly masculine scent. The automobile-inspired bottle’s elongated shape and horizontal position conveys speed, and the cap’s ring suggests a radiator grille with the rubber ring acting as a tire. It’s the company’s first men’s fragrance since Déclaration a decade ago, and peels out of the gates exclusively at Bloomingdale’s this month. 3.3 fl. Oz. Spying on your friends, and your friends’ friends, and your friends’ friends’ friends, is the greatest window into exploring burgeoning scenes: fashion, music, art. Jumping from person to person is like a virtual Venn diagram to all things on the cultural upswing. It was while on such a spy hunt that I happened upon one of the greatest talents you have yet to meet: Sasa Kovacevic. Sasa, who now lives is Germany and designs under the moniker Sadak (from the name for a traditional sleeveless jacket worn in certain regions of his native Serbia) is Berlin’s answer to McQueen in the 1990’s. He is post-grad Central St. Martins, full of ideas and cultural references, complete with an untainted exploration that defies commercial output, but is equally stocked with a social relevancy that demands a second glance. Serbian tradition of killing the elderly once they become a familial burden. And while the collection’s roots are in the past, Sadak presents it with the utmost in super-future, avant garde sensibility. It is obvious that he is running ranks with the likes of Alexandre Herchcovitch, Bernard Wilhelm, or Raf Simons faster than the historical archives can keep up and faster than I can discover another unknown great, buried in the pages of my favorite social networking site. — JR SASA KOVACEVIC PHOTO BY MARIO LEKO Sadak’s fall collection, titled Lapot, is based upon the popular ancient ////////////HAVE YOU HEARD // That the Cincinnati Art Museum will be the first in the U.S. to present China Design Now, when it leaves the Victoria & Albert Museum in London? // That Detriot is one the country’s thriving art communities — and a Mies van der Rohe house can go for a mere $100,000? // That Peter Beard is shooting the 2009 Pirelli calendar — available in November? 24 CITY TY
