CITY Issue 59 - (Page 22) //// ACTION Back in the Saddle FASHION: EQUESTRIAN GEAR Don’t limit your riding gear to the tack room. In D& G’s Fall ‘08 collection, a pair of jodhpurs, (in stores now) were designed for everyday Autumn wear. Even the go-to polo, cavalry-style, and western riding apparel companies have taken their looks away from just the Equestrian set, and onto the city streets. ARIAT has released a pair of slick boots with plaid purple lining, and Brooklynbased DER-DAU has taken its leather goods hightech by releasing an IPOD case made of the same leather and cow hide used to make its boots, belts, and chaps. — RL Custom Made HOTEL: LOS ANGELES If the fancy hotels along Rodeo Drive bore you, stay close to LAX and check in to the playfully designed Custom Hotel, one of two new inns from renowned residential developer Avi Brosh. Best known for his inventive Lofts at Laurel Court and Lofts at Hollywood and Vine, the California-based designer is now focusing on the hospitality business. The Custom’s unique features include a fire pit, heated outdoor pool, sundeck with tiered seating, “sheep’s meadow” lounge complete with life-sized stuffed sheep, vintage vending machines (including an edgy 18-and-over unit), classic video games, and a live DJ lounge. Brosh has also recently opened Palihouse Holloway, a West Hollywood hotel that looks like it was plucked right out of New Orleans’ French Quarter, which caters to those who plan on staying for at least a week. Four more Brosh hotels are in the pipeline. — AS HEARD HA YOU VE ? THAT SIMON DE PURY WILL BE THE AUCTIONEER AT THE HUDSON VALLEY CENTER FOR CONTEMPORARY ART'S AUCTION ON OCTOBER 5? Vroom, vroom and va-va-voom BOOK: STARS AND CARS OF THE '50S Fast cars and beautiful women go hand in hand. So it’s no surprise that Edward Quinn’s new photography book, Stars and Cars of the ’50s, pairs celebrities of the decade with their equally glamorous automobiles. Also the author of Riviera Cocktail, released in March 2007, Quinn was fortunate enough to have lived on the Côte d’Azur during the “Golden Fifties,” a time when the area was just becoming a playground for the rich, famous and downright fabulous. Among the boldface names captured is none other than Picasso himself, who is shown with his Hispano-Suiza. The 250-page tome, featuring 150 duotones, will be available in November from teNeues for $95 — a small price to pay for a trip down the bright, exaggerated lane of Fifties-era style. — DP 22 CITY TY
