CITY Issue 59 - (Page 63) Tell me about Pe es P ojects. I know the e a e two galle y spaces, one in Los ngeles and one in Be lin, but the e seems to be mo e to it than just the galle y spaces. Well, that is the name of the galle y so on a ce tain level that is all it is. But on anothe it also ep esents a pa ticula aesthetic app oach, as well as an app oach to managing an a ts business. Why Los ngeles and Be lin? L is whe e my family lives and Be lin is whe e I like to live. But I love being in L when I am in the US. It is my favo ite me ican city. nd Be lin is just ad! How much time do you spend in each city? It va ies f om yea to yea , but lately I have been in Be lin, o at least Eu ope, a ound pe cent of the time. I t avel a lot, so I am a ely in one city fo mo e than two weeks without going somewhe e else fo at least a few days. s much of a fan as I am of Pe es P ojects, I honestly don’t know much about the histo y. It seems you popped onto the scene out of nowhe e. Can you give us some info mation on how it sta ted and how it’s g own into what it is today? Really? Do you eally want to know this? Isn’t it bette to just not know some things? I don’t think my past is that inte esting and I p efe to keep it in the past. I had an office job, I p acticed law, and studied a t histo y my whole life. I also come f om an ent ep eneu ial family, so when I stopped p acticing law I mixed my main inte ests. I enjoy it a g eat deal. I hea d a umo that you used to wo k fo Jeff ey Deitch. Is it t ue? Not t ue at all. I have neve wo ked fo any galle y. I do admi e Jeff ey, but I think if I had wo ked fo a galle y I would have mo e likely wo ked at Gagosian. What was you fi st job? Thinking, thinking . . . I did some acting when I was younge , wo ked in my family’s business, that so t of stuff. How did you get into a t? My g andpa ents collected mode n a t, and th ough them I became inte ested in a t as a boy. Whe e did you go to college and what did you study? I studied in the U.S. and Eu ope and focused on inte national politics, with a focus on West Eu opean diplomatic elations. Then I obtained a law deg ee. Have you had a mento o mento s at any point in you ca ee who helped you? Not pa ticula ly, othe than my g andpa ents, and f om them my own inte est took ove . What did you want to be when you we e a kid? n a t collecto and house husband. My main ambition has always been to hang out, have a good time and go f om thing to thing but always with lots of suppo t. We e you awa e of a t when you we e a kid? Who was you favo ite a tist? bsolutely, and initially it was Pablo Picasso and also F ancis Picabia, but I was also ve y into Juan G is fo a bit. / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / ///// THERE ARE A LOT OF FACTORS THAT I LOOK TO IN DECIDING WHO I WORK WITH, THE MAIN ISSUE BEING AN ARTIST I FEEL HAS A VERY COMPLETE HANDLE ON WHAT THEY DO, AND HOW IT RELATES TO WHO THEY ARE F om what I can tell, Pe es P ojects was inst umental in Te ence Koh’s ca ee . Do you ag ee? Su e, I gave him his fi st solo exhibition and have continued to champion his wo k and nu tu e his ambitions. I feel that ou p ofessional histo ies a e quite linked, and even ou pe sonal expe iences of the last six yea s. What’s you favo ite wo k by Koh? Oh gosh, the e a e so many. The Whole Family installation is inst umental in unde standing Te ence’s outlook. His installation at the Zu ich Kunsthalle was mind blowing. lso, his Coffi n is sublime, his tombstone made of suga fo his fi st Be lin solo. His singula light fo his Whitney solo is so beautiful, and the la ge-scale Last Suppe called GOD. I could eally go on and on. The e a e a lot of facto s that I look to in deciding who I wo k with, the main issue being an a tist that I feel has a ve y complete handle on what they do, and how it elates to who they a e. I think the a t fai phenomenon is getting out of cont ol. It seems that eve y time I tu n a ound, the e’s a new biennale o a t fai . What a e you thoughts? I like a t fai s fo what they a e. They a e events gea ed at seeing a g eat deal, gathe ing info mation, conducting business. One p oblem I have with fai s these days a e the la ge numbe s of uninte ested tou ists that come th ough and waste you time. t fai s a e just that, fai s to conduct the business of a t. nyone not inte ested in that should stay home, o at least out of my way. What a e you five favo ite things in Los ngeles and Be lin? In Los ngeles, it is all about the g eat estau ants like The Palms Thai Restauant, Siete Ma es Mexican Restau ant, Emp ess Pavillion, and Daikokuya in Little Tokyo. In Be lin, I love going to the B oken Hea ts Club, and Museum Island is amazing. What a e you top five museums? Zu ich Kunsthalle; Ethnog aphic Museum in Be lin; The Se pentine Galle y; The Hambu ge Banhoff; MUS C in Leon, Spain; and, of cou se, El P ado is amazing, too. This list could be a lot longe — I go to museums o en and eally enjoy it! What a e you top five cities in the wo ld? London, Be lin, ntwe p, Hong Kong, and I am heading to Tokyo in a couple of weeks and am su e it will be one my new favo ites! nything I didn’t ask that you want the wo ld to know? I eally don’t like the wo ld knowing anything about me. The less that people know about me I think the bette . Of cou se, this doesn’t apply to the people that I inte act with di ectly. CITY TY 63
