Myrtle Beach Holiday Planning Guide - (Page 10) Nights of a Thousand Candles is a Magical Holiday Treat rookgreen Gardens is the floral jewel of South Carolina’s coastal community, and Brookgreen’s most popular annual event, Nights of a Thousand Candles, has become a holiday tradition. Nights of a Thousand Candles is seven nights of holiday magic where visitors can stroll Brookgreen Gardens’ candlelit garden paths, savor a glass of wine or hot cider, pause to enjoy musical performances, dine on Lowcountry seafood, and enjoy holiday shopping. It is a holiday tradition that your group will not want to miss. Lights sparkle from Brookgreen’s live oak trees, and candlelight illuminates garden paths as musicians play, carolers sing and visitors experience the enchantment of Nights of a Thousand Candles. With Brookgreen’s pathways lit by thousands of luminaries, visitors may wander through the gardens’ many areas while being entertained along the way by such musical artists as handbell ringers, choral groups, string players, or even a brass quintet. Last year, 20,000 visitors marveled at the spectacular display of lights and holiday-themed entertainment throughout the gardens. This year, the holiday magic returns to Brookgreen Gardens on three consecutive weekends in December—December 5 & 6; 12 & 13; and 18, 19 & 20. Holiday visitors will observe that Brookgreen Gardens, a former rice plantation of more than 9000 acres, is a delightfully diverse ecological mix—a testament to the natural landscapes that surrounded the site in the early years of the 20th century. Today, Brookgreen continues to preserve its natural heritage, and at the same time it has developed spectacular display gardens and landscaped areas. It now includes acres of formal gardens, a Lowcountry center, preserves of native animals and plants, and a spectacular Live Oak Allee. This remarkable area is also the site of America’s first public sculpture garden, and during Nights of a Thousand Candles the sculptures are spectacularly lit by multicolored lights. Created by Anna Hyatt and Archer Huntington in 1931 as a way to give modern sculptors an opportunity to display their work, the outdoor art gallery now displays more than 900 works of art over 50 beautifully landscaped acres—an exceptionally beautiful display during the holidays. Few holiday experiences compare to Nights of a Thousand Candles, with its candles and lights twinkling along the garden paths and among the mossdraped live oaks. With its abundance of luminaries, beautiful music, homemade refreshments and treats, delicious dining, and unique shopping, it is truly an enchanted garden not to be missed.
