Virginia Explorer - Demo - (Page 8) ON THE ROAD WITH DYLAN AND POP-POP A Mountain Experience By David Bodle WYTHEVILLE/ROANOKE/ BEDFORD – Multigenerational travel is on the rise. Little did I know eight years ago when I began these summer adventures with my four-year-old grandson that I’d be setting a trend . . . and having a ball! Since 1999, our road trips have taken us on wonderful adventures. This June, we headed to the mountains of western Virginia for a six-day experience that included everything from art to animals, and from music to mining. We arrived at the Best Western Wytheville Inn, a group-friendly property, conveniently located just off I-81 and I-77. After mandatory pool time and an early dinner, we were off to the Chautauqua Festival in the Park. This weeklong festival marks its 25th anniversary in 2008. Sponsored by the Wythe Arts Council, Ltd., the festival is true to its namesake, bringing education and entertainment to all. Our evening’s featured entertainers presented authentic soul music, rhythm and blues, and some Motown. Other evenings welcomed gospel, big band, country, Latin and Caribbean, and classic rock. Wytheville’s summer celebration in the Park offers tremendous value to a group tour with wonderful activities all day long, great food, and superb entertainment. Our second day was jam-packed with treasure hunting! Our first stop was the Virginia City Gem Mine & Museum, where Dylan was pleased to find his birthstone. Yes, we are richer for the experience . . . not from the size of our finds but the size of our fun! Great photo opportunities and 20 historic buildings preserved from the 1800s make this a fascinating stop. Just a short drive on Big Walker Mountain Highway, a National Forest Scenic Highway, is Big Walker Lookout Tower and Country Store. Dylan assured me that the view from the tower was breathtaking. Avoiding the climb, I focused on the Country Store and can gladly report that there are plenty of great souvenir treasures to take home!
