Questions & Answers
Continued from page 72
These are easy statements to make, easy to write, easy to agree
with, but not easy to do something about. Choosing the right
music at the right time is not only one of the teacher’s most important assignments, but also one of the most difficult.
Probably all of us have made mistakes in our choices of music in
the past. For example, have we ever assigned:
Music that encompasses only a small range of the piano (it
seems too bad that parents have to buy a whole keyboard when the
student plays only a few notes around Middle C).
Music so long that the student can’t maintain a steady pulse
throughout.
Music in which one part is much less attractive than the others.
There are many pieces of sheet music that begin and end delightfully but are ruined by a middle section that is either much harder
or much less attractive.
Music which undoes all our work on relaxation because of
stretches too large for the student’s hand.
Music that takes too long to learn. A young student can’t wait,
and shouldn’t have to. He or she wants and needs the reward as
soon as possible.
Music that is much more difficult than it sounds.
Music assigned, not because the student will be sure to like it,
but because it is “good for him.”
Music that doesn’t fit a plan for musical growth.
A duet where one part (usually the secondo) is a bore to practice.
Music whose title (or illustrations) is beneath the dignity of the

particular student to whom it is assigned.
Music that includes signs or symbols with which the student is
not wholly familiar.
Music so over-edited that the student gets lost in details, and
can’t see the forest for the trees.
Music that requires sensitive pedaling (usually syncopated pedaling) before the student can handle it.
Music which the student can read (notes, rhythm, signs, etc.)
and which she or he has the technical facility to play, but which
requires more musical maturity than he or she presently possesses.
There is nothing worse than hearing music like Mozart’s Fantasie
in D minor or Schumann’s “The Poet Speaks” just “played-at.”
These examples are only a beginning. Every teacher would
doubtless profit by compiling his or her own list of the kinds of
music learned through long, sometimes painful experience, not to
choose.
